Six alumni made the trip on November 27th to represent the "Guilder-geeks" for the 2nd straight year. They were joined by nearly 300 other alumni from various schools in the Rockland county area. This madness has been carrying on for 22 consecutive years and covers the infamous Bear Mountain 3 mile cross-country course. Bear Mountain being the equivalent of our SPAC course.
Reigning champion Jim Sweeney ('99), now training for marathons and studying Forensic Psychology, lead the team with a 15th place finish in 16:39. The newly engaged Dan Smitas ('93), who can usually be found playing hoop 3-4 times a week on the mean streets of Rhode Island, mustered a nice finish in 20th, running 16:58. Just off his teams NJCAA XC title, Dan Haggerty ('03) of SUNY-Delhi, was next across the line. After finishing his first half-marathon a week prior (1:14), Haggerty ran 17:19, good enough for 25th. Andrew Rickert ('97), fresh of his 2nd season as Head Coach of the Saint Rose XC team, was next in 27th, clocking a 17:34. Rounding out the team was Justin Parietti ('04), a freshman at Alfred University, who finished 44th in 18:46. The team was supported by Jake Zucker ('04), a frosh at the University of Rochester. Overall, the teams' score was good enough for 4th out of 10 teams. A highly competitive Clarkstown North (49) took their fourth consecutive team title in a close competition with Tappen Zee (54). Suffern was 3rd with 77 and Guilderland had 131.
The team is already looking forward to their return next year, hoping to add to the number of participants on the team and their finish on the field. Clarkstown North is also planning on coming up for our alumni race in September!
