The
beginning was more or less the same with the Manga version. But Sayo was more
cheerful about her spirit life and less clumsy. She found the current Class 2A
interesting and even silently followed them in the after-school activities
(Nodoka while she was reading, Sakurako in the Lacrosse Club, Ayaka while she
was practicing violin, Misa in the Choir and Eva + Chachamaru in their flower
arranging).
The
episode was also announcing the Field Trip is going to be held in Kyoto ((bumps
fist to the air)) and the class need to be formed into groups. After the lessons
are over, Asuna went over to Asakura, who was thinking about how to write the
news in Mahora News, and asked her if she had a group yet. At the same time,
Asakura noticed Asuna's name list and the name Aisaka Sayo. It turned out that
no one knew who she is. Many theories like "a printing mistake", "originally
planned to enroll to Mahora but didn't come at the end" or "she was hospitalized
for a long time" popped out. Of course, this sparkled the interest of our
resident Paparazzi Girl.
While
Asakura couldn't find anything from the Internet, she noticed the "1940~" note
underneath Sayo's name. So she dug up the old records from the News Report
Department and finally found Sayo's entry, stating Sayo had died in Showa 15th
year (i.e. 1940). But the cause of death was not stated. Therefore Asakura (and
Sayo, who had been following the Paparazzi for the whole time) went to the
Library Island for more research.
At
the Library Island, things did not go well for Asakura since she could not find
any news that was related to Sayo. Just then, Nodoka walked by (with a stack of
books) and Asakura asked if she could think of anything that would have
information about Mahora Academy in 1940. Hon'ya-chan suggested a list of stuff
and finally Asakura decided to check on the anthology that was made by the
students. In one of them, Asakura found a tanka (a kind of Japanese poem) that
was written by Sayo. In the tanka, a flower "Tsuwabuki" was mentioned (I will
look for its English name...soon...). This also made Sayo remember why would she
become a land-locked spirit.
Sayo
actually had a younger sister and Sayo's mother had died. Her sister somehow
believed that if the flower bed near the Mahora clock tower was filled up with
Tsuwabuki, then their mother would come back to them. Her sister planted some
Tsuwabuki on the flower bed, and craved the words "I hope mother would come back
to us" on a brick while Sayo watched over her. Later on a stormy night, Sayo
left her home since she wanted to protect the flower bed for her sister. Then
something happened (which was not shown in the episode) and Sayo died.
Asakura
looked up on Tsuwabuki and suddenly left the Library Island. Sayo followed and
realized that Asakura had gone to the abandoned clock tower. At the same time,
Sayo had shockingly noticed that the whole backyard was filled with Tsuwabuki.
The reason why Asakura could remember this place was because she had come to
this clock tower some time before the start of the episode since there were
rumors that the clock tower would be pulled down in order to build a new part of
the campus. Meanwhile, Sayo walked on the flower bed (this won't destroyed the
flowers, she's a spirit, remember?) and discovered a brick with some childish
craving on it. The words on it read "I hope mother and sister would come back to
us". Sayo could not help but started to bend down and cry at the message. 
Just then,
Asakura turned around and saw the crying girl appeared suddenly. She quickly
recognized that was Sayo and she is a spirit, and planned to take a photo of it.
But when she took out the digital camera, she could not press down the
shutter...Asakura herself also noticed that she could not take that photo and
put down the camera
Soon,
Sayo recomposed herself and also noticed Asakura's Weapon of Destruction. But
she was puzzled, "you didn't take the picture?""I couldn't take it. It's wrong...isn't it?" was Asakura's answered. Sayo shyly thanked her and Asakura just grinned at her embarrassedly.
On
the next day, Negi was discussing the field trip groups with 2A and asked if
there's anyone who didn't have a group yet. At this moment, Asakura, who was
able to see Sayo now, realized the spirit was forgotten and so far she was the
only one who could see her. She stood up and told Negi that he had forgotten
someone. Next to her, Sayo told her that she doesn't need to do that because
this (Sayo being forgotten) happened every year. Of course Asakura didn't want
that. And she said "It's class no.1, Aisaka Sayo!"
The
rest of the class + Negi was confused about Asakura's words. He asked if Asakura
knew something about Sayo as he wanted to know why he had never seen her as
well. At this point, Asakura did not know how to explain Sayo is a spirit
without being seen as a lunatic. Then without anyone noticing, Eva muttered a
few well-chosen words and made Sayo visible to the whole class!
Negi
asked Asakura again about Sayo and this time Asakura hesitantly explained she is
a spirit who died in 1940. The Negi was still shocked over the fact and Asakura
quickly defended Sayo, saying she is not a bad spirit. But the rest of the 2A
was thrilled that they actually had a ghostly classmate. They even invited Sayo
to join their group in the Field Trip. Although it indirectly led to the Second
Asuna-Ayaka War in the episode (Ayaka: "Aisaka-san! You could not go with this
Violent Monkey Girl!"), it was still a happy ending. 
While the
whole class was over-excited about Sayo, Asakura gave the spirit a thump up and
Sayo had blushingly returned.At the back of the classroom, Chachamaru asked why Eva would use magic to help Sayo, which she replied that because she also understands the bitterness of being land-locked to one place.
At the end of the episode, the scene was skipped to headmaster's office. Headmaster was reciting Sayo's tanka about Tsuwabuki and Shizuna-sensei asked who wrote that tanka. And headmaster replied that "it was written by a girl whom I've once liked."
