Village Development Committee (VDC)

His Majesty's Government of nepal can declare a rural area, looking at its geographical situation, population, unity of its inhabitants and other things, a village development committee, decarcating 4 sides borders, comprising one or more villages. There shall be a VDC in each of the village development area declared by HMG as an executive body of the village council. It consists of the following:

(a) One Chairperson and one Vice-chairperson elected by the people of the concerned village development area.
(b) Ward Chairpersons of elected from each of the 9 wards of the village development area
(c) Two members nominated by the VDC from among the members of the village council with at least one woman. ( The minimum age limit of the members of VDC, ward committee and village council is 21 years and each of them ae elected/nominated for 5 years.)

Ward Committee: Each VDC is divided into 9 wards on the basis of population and geographical situation. There shall be a ward committee in each ward consisting of a ward chairperson, one woman ward member and 3 ward members, elected by the people of the concerned ward.

Powers and Functions of VDC: The VDC exercises a wide variety of powers. The VDC is entrusted with several duties and responsibilities by the village council, district development committee and HMG. The power and functions of VDC can be categorized under the following headings:

  3. Construction and Transportation
  4. Education and Sports
  5. Irrigation, Soil Conservation and River Control
  6. Physical Development
  7. Health
  8. Forest and Environment
  9. Language and Culture
  10. Tourism and Cottage Industries
