Scenes from Sri Lanka (June/July 2001)
We had always wanted to see this teardrop shaped island, once called Ceylon, that sits at the foot of India. Flying home from the UAE gave us the perfect 2-week opportunity to explore Sri Lanka and get to know one of the friendliest cultures we've ever seen. We started in Colombo, the capital, then went by train up into the highlands to the old city of Kandy.
Judy has a look at a prayer stupa inside a Buddhist temple in Colombo.
We enjoyed everything about the old city of Kandy, especially the ethnic dancing. Here are some of the costumed Kandian dancers.
Here's another richly-dressed resident of Kandy, the Malagawa Tusker, the elephant used in the annual parade at the Temple of the Tooth.
These woven-stick bullock carts were a common sight on roads in the Sri Lankan highlands.

Another way of transport was the ever-present three-wheeler, the "tuk-tuk."  Here's Judy arriving at her destination and the driver eager for his pay.
Kandy's most famous temple is the Temple of the Tooth, which houses the tooth of the Buddha.
