Richard SCOTT of Coton, Cambridgeshire

Richard SCOTT and his wife Charlotte were the parents of Sarah, who married Henry FREESTONE and produced 9 children including William, Leonard Richard and Jesse.

The first record of Richard SCOTT that I have found so far, is his marriage to Charlotte FORIEST of Stapleford at St. Andrew's Church, Stapleford, Cambs on 19 Nov 1800. At that time he was living at Great Shelford.

The Marriage was witnessed by John and Martha FORIEST. Four years earlier, on 1 Nov 1796, Charlotte and Martha were witnesses to the marriage of James LOFTS and Lydia FORIEST. It is likely that Charlotte, Lydia, Martha and John were sisters and brother, but there are no other records of FORIEST in Stapleford.

Within a year of their marriage, Richard and Charlotte SCOTT moved to Coton, possibly to take over 'The Plough' Inn. The couple baptized 10 children in Coton church, including :

The eldest daughter, Lydia, married Henry EDWARDS in 1822. The story of their descendants is told by Janet Hurst in "The Edwards Family of Coton".

The third daughter, Sarah, married Henry FREESTONE at Stapleford on 31 Oct 1830. Many of their descendants are living today, in England and Australia. I am one of 17 known great-great-grandchildren. I hope to be able to trace many more in the future.

Nothing more is known about the rest of Richard SCOTT's children apart from Susan, who seems to have married Parker GERMAN, lived in London for a while, then returned to Coton to take over 'The Plough' after her father's death.

In the 1851 Census, Richard SCOTT was a widower aged 76. He gave his birth place as Thriplow. Charlotte seems to have died before 1838, as I have not found her name in the index of death registers between 1837 and 1851. Richard SCOTT himself died 15 Jan 1855.

Who were Richard SCOTT's parents ? There is no record of his baptism at Thriplow where he claims to have been born. However, there were two SCOTT families in Thriplow at the right time. Richard and Martha SCOTT baptized Joseph in 1766 and William in 1768. They could have moved out of the village for a while, returning with a larger family including Richard. Parish registers for neighbouring villages will have to be searched to confirm this theory. Richard & Martha did return at least to be buried at Thriplow.

The other Thriplow family, Thomas and Mary SCOTT, baptized Mary in 1761 and Samuel in 1763. Another son William was baptized at the age of 34 - he would have been born about 1769. It is possible that they had other children, perhaps including Richard, who were never baptized.

It seems odd that Richard and Charlotte named four of their children after the four known members of the FORIEST family, but none after Richard himself, nor after the other SCOTTs apart from William which is very common and Martha which appears on both sides. Together with the fact that both witnesses to the marriage were FORIESTs, it seems that Charlotte was very close to her family but that Richard either didn't get on with his or none survived to 1800.
