A 10.5 million signing from Juventus on 3rd August 1999, Thierry has developed into the most exciting player in the Arsenal squad. Thierry was voted Young Footballer of the Year 1996 in France and is a regular in the French national side. He was his countrys leading goalscorer in the 1998 World Cup finals and had previously played under Gunners manager Arsene Wenger at Monaco when he was just 17 years old.
He has devastating speed, and although he can play on the flanks his strength is in the middle of the front line. A direct player with an eye for goal, Thierry got stronger and better as the season progressed. Apart from his great pace, he has wonderful dribbling skills, a dazzling ability to finish and the enthusiasm to get back and defend when the need arises.
He is an unselfish player who creates chances for team-mates, and was often the difference between Arsenal and their opponents last season. His first goal for the Gunners was a wonderful strike in the away league fixture at Southampton. Just eight minutes after coming off the bench, he drove home a looping shot from outside the penalty box to secure a 1-0 victory. Although he had missed a number of chances in previous games, Thierry then went from strength to strength to become Arsenals leading goalscorer. He recorded 15 goals in the 15 games leading up to the UEFA Cup final a phenomenal feat.
He also had a productive season at international level. Recalled to the French national team for the friendly with Scotland in March, he impressed sufficiently to win a regular place for les Bleus, scoring five times in ten games and playing a vital role in their sensational victory in the European Championship.
