He was a key player in both their F.A. Premier Youth League and Southern Junior Floodlit Cup Final winning teams in 1998. He made his first-team debut on November 30th 1999 at Middlesbrough in the Worthington Cup. He worked his way to the fringes of the first team and scored on only his second Premiership appearance in the 1-1 draw with Bradford City on September 9, 2000. His rise last season was nothing short of meteoric as he was elevated to the full England side after just a handful of assured club appearances.
