Our Aim: To promote and enjoy safe sea kayaking in the Gisborne area, catering for all experience levels .

With the above aim in mind, we hope to supply, communication, buddies, organised trips and training sessions. With winter nearly upon us, trip planning this time of the year is difficult due to the uncertainty of the weather. This means that a lot of trips are organised a few days before when the forecast is suitable for the planned trip or the location/destination is determined. You can add to this the complication of different experience levels, kayaks, and the expectation of exactly what you want. Therefore I feel close communication is essential. If you have a trip in mind or want to participate in one then let your Club Captain know thats me John, 3 Matthews Road, 8684657 or email. Also the types of trips you like or would like to experience.

Somewhere between Whangara and Tolaga This was taken about 300 metres off shore and while there was a swell running the paddling was quite smooth apart from the occasional wave break over a submerged rook or reef, and the negotiation of some bumpy water around some of the islands / rocks. We took off from Whangara without getting too wet in the surf and arrived in Tolaga Bay with a nice ripple to glide in on. The wind was with us as was the southerly swell. The swell induced surf at Waihau Bay meant that we had to forgo our first scheduled stop and push on to Pourewa Island by Cooks Cove for lunch. It was a little rough to investigate the sea caves on the seaward side of the island so after a leisurely break we made our way around the corner, detouring into Cooks Cove, and on to our landing point at Tolaga Bay. We left Gisborne at about 7.30am and was home by 3.30pm. While this trip was not difficult a fairly high level of fitness was required as the three of us paddled steadily for about 4.5 hours without a break. Thank-you to Lynn (my wife) for dropping us off and picking us up). John Humphris.
