The G&L Story
As you know, Fender, created by Leo Fender, is known for it's instruments(especially guitars and basses) and amplifiers. In the '70's, high ranking Fender employees pretty much kicked Leo Fender out of his own company, which is just really screwed up. I mean, you just don't do that, especially with the reputation He established from the quality of the instruments. I think because he was going to tweak the guitars so they were better sounding.
So, Leo joined Music Man. He didn't care for designing and working for them too much. From working at Music Man, Leo became friends with a guy named George Fuller. George designed basses.
After quitting Music Man, Leo and George in the late '70s/early 80's, started working together to what would become G&L. They were made on Fender Ave. in Fullerton, California and still are to this day.
I don't know about the G&L basses, but the guitar I have says "guitars by leo" on the headstock. So because Leo could do whatever to the guitars, he enhanced their sound and shape. My guitar does have a better sound than a Fender Stratocaster. My guitar was designed similar to it. Mine is called a G&L Legacy. I know this first-hand because at one time, I practiced on my Uncle Jimmie's black Strat (it's pretty.) His guitar is about nine/ten years older than mine though. The headstock on my guitar is straighter than a Fender. The slant thing that lays against you when you play, well, that thing on a Strat is not as deep a cut as mine, which makes mine more comfortable. My pickups are vintage-styled and the sunburst paint on my guitar is prettier than a Fender's. On Strats, it is only two-tone, dark brown and fades into orange. (Matt's dad has a Mexican made one.) Mine is three-tones, black, red, and a natural/orangy color. Plus, I think the finish is better. I don't remember how many different sounds you get from the switch that Strat does, but mine gets five. My dials are nicer than the Strats. The bridge and the tuners are different. Also, my pickguard is chisled different. The major difference though between the G&L Legacy and the Fender Stratocaster is that my guitar is made out of different woods. The very top layer of wood on my guitar's body is maple. The main wood in the body though is swamp ash, a really heavy wood. The heavier the guitar, the better it is. The Strat by no means is light, but my guitar weights a ton. I'm serious, when I played that Squier Strat on the Monday after Prom 2004, it was like air compared to mine. So it was weird feelin'.
So that's why...
I have the best guitar.
