| The Girls Like Us Inc. was concieved by Pamela Gray, during her matriculation at Clark Atlanta University in 2002. While studying the documentry "Beyond Killing Us Softly" in a humanities class, Pamela eyes were opened to the affects the media and marketing ploys have on women and girls. "That film changed my life, I began to look at the impossible social norms and the way society treats and portays women and it sickened me and what sickened me most was how I had been quietly affected by it." From this point forward, Pamela was moved to make a change in the world and in the lives of young girls everywhere. Pamela is no stranger when it comes to mentoring youth. For over a decade, Pamela has worked with several organizations who's mission is to educate and empower adolescents. "It only make sense, the youth is our future and we need to do everything in our power to make sure that they are empowered, educated and encouraged to be the best they can be." Although Pamela has worked with both boys and girls in the past, she states that working with adolescent girls has become her passion. " I am a firm believer in gender specific programs. Boys and girls are different not only physically but mentally. They are also faced with different issues, so it is only natural that we deal with these issues seperatly and in a diffrent manner. There are so many things affecting adolescent girls, they are really in danger right now." Girls Like Us has been in the making since 2002, and has been opperating since September 2006. A dream that was four years in the making has finally come to fruition. "I'm very excited to be serving the girls of my community. Girls Like Us should be offered to every girl that needs us and I hope to continue to make that possible. I want to let girls everywhere know that their are girls and women just like us, that have made their mark on the world, and that is what is truley important. It is important that young girls learn about themselves, learn to love themselves and their bodies. Set standards for their life. Because if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything. Most importantly they need to love themselves and know what they want out of life and then work hard for it." |
