ROME-POMPEI-AMALFI-POSITANO-SORRENTO-ROME (AMALFI COAST)

Leaving from Rome, the client will go directly to the spectacular ruins of Pompei. When Vesuvius erupted in AD79, volcanic ash and mud preserved the Roman town almost exactly as it was at that precise moment. It is no wonder that Pompei is the most visited city in Europe. One becomes a part of living history, seeing much more than archaeological ruins. Visitors will participate in the daily life of the past inhabitants as they find themselves situated inside actual brothels, Roman baths, bakeries, bars and luxurious villas. Bring comfortable walking shoes.

From Pompei, the tour continues to the magnificent AMALFI COAST where the picturesque rocks and gorges sparkle with the lovely, white Moorish-style houses. The air is filled with the luscious fragrance of the famous Mediterranean  lemon trees. POSITANO, is a favorite among Americans for its beauty, charming restaurants and trendy boutiques. Most, however, do not know that Positano was once part of the Amalfi Maritime Republic and rivaled Venice as an important mercantile power. After the challenging and strenuous hillsides of Positano (where one climbs instead of walks), visitors will welcome the flat terrain of SORRENTO. This once exclusive, aristocratic resort town is now a favorite vacation spot of tourists from all over the world. The view of the Bay of Naples is spectacular.

ROME-POMPEI-SORRENTO-CAPRI-NAPOLI-ROME (AMALFI COAST)

From Pompei, visitors will visit Sorrento (see descriptions above) and will then take the famous hydrofoil to CAPRI, one of the most charming islands in the world. Not even the overwhelming summer crowds can destroy the mystique of this seemingly magical island. Please note that the driver does not accompany clients to Capri, but goes on to Naples where he will meet them for their return trip to Rome.

In NAPLES, we provide a short panoramic tour as traffic makes it virtually impossible to have an extensive visit by car. Naples needs to be seen on foot.

ROME-SIENA-SAN GIMIGNANO-ORVIETO-ROME (TUSCANY-UMBRIA)

Florence's historical rival, SIENA, was a wealthy and powerful medieval city. Siena is a gothic city as opposed to a Renaissance city like Florence, and is spread out over the slopes of three red clay hills, from which the color "burnt siena" gets its name. Siena's wonderful main square, the Piazza del Campo, is one of the finest in Italy. It is large and fan shaped, and provides a perfect resting place for sipping cappuccinos and people-watching. While the cathedrals and palazzi of other cities might be more magnificent, Siena's charm is that it is a comfortable, relaxing city.

Be careful, however, when planning your visit. On July 2nd and August 16th, each year, the city hosts the famous PALIO, a horserace in which the city's 17 neighborhoods compete to possess the cloth banner for which the contest is named. The townspeople take the event extremely seriously and tourists will be able to feel the rivalry and mounting excitement in the air if they visit in the weeks prior to the Palio. However, one would not want to find themselves in the middle of the chaos during the event.

SAN GIMIGNANO is a lovely, jewel of a town not far from the Siena. Its narrow, winding streets are steep and challenging even to visitors who are in the best shape. If you need to rest, you can sit down and sip the wonderful local white wine called Vernaccia (easiest to find in the storefronts marked "degustazione"). The town is noted for its high walls and medieval towers. These towers, referred to by the locals as "mini-Manhattan"were not only used as defensive structures against enemies, they were also the pride of their respective owners, each of whom wanted to outdo the other in making his tower the tallest. Before leaving San Gimignano, be sure to visit its most famous work of art located in the church of Saint Agostino - Benozzo Gozzoli's beautiful 15th century fresco depicting the life of St. Augustine.

ORVIETO is one of Umbria's greatest cities. The entire city is dramatically perched upon a large, square rock, which seemst o erupt out of the countryside as one is taking in sights along the highway. Having been an Etruscan settlement, Orvieto was taken over by the Romans in 283 BC and has had close ties with Rome ever since. The popes used to spend months there, fleeing both enemies and Rome's intense summer heat. Orvieto's medieval character has been almost perfectly preserved in that new construction was almost impossible on top of the rock.

ROME-TARQUINIA-TUSCANIA-LAGO BOLSENA-ORVIETO-ROME (ETRUSCAN TOUR)

TARQUINIA was actually one of the most important of the Etruscan ports during the 14th Century. Known for many significant archaeological discoveries, visitors can enjoy a rich collection of Etruscan antiquities. The Museo Nazionale Tarquiniese (the National Tarquinian Museum) hosts a notable collection of Etruscan artefacts uncovered in the Etruscan Necropolis closeby. After Tarquinia, clients will visit the beautiful medieval area of TUSCANIA and LAGO BOLSENA.

ROME-ASSISI-ORVIETO-ROME (UMBRIA)

Assisi is delightfully peaceful. It has been very well preserved and the narrow, winding streets will leave no doubt as to why Assisi is the sister city of San Francisco. Being a favorite among religious and secular tourists and the most visited city in Umbria, visitors will have to strategically plan their walks at mealtimes when the streets will be less crowded. While the numerous tourists do not spoil Assis' charm, it is advisable to avoid visiting during Easter or Christmas or on the feast of the patron saint himself (October 4th). The medieval buildings in pink and white stone cast an enchanting rose colored hue upon the city. If you want a perfect snack, try a porchetta sandwich carved from a whole roasted pig flavored with delicious spices. You can find this specialty at any of the mobile snack bars parked around town.

ROME-MONTEPULCIANO-PIENZA-MONTALCINO-ROME (TUSCANY)

MONTEPULCIANO is one of Tuscany's loveliest hill towns. It was under the patronage of the Medici and other noble families. Famous for its Nobile wine (Vino Nobile di Montelpuciano), it also provides wonderful examples of Renaissance and Barroque architecture.

PIENZA (originally named Corsignano), is not known for its wine as are the other two cities of the tour. It is famous for being the birthplace of Aneas Silvius Piccolomini (1405-1464), who became Pope Pius II in 1458. Piccolomini envisioned remarking his native hamlet into a utopia which was later renamed Pienza, in his honor. Unlike Montepulciano, it is very orderly and planned by Pope Pius' architect Rosselino, who designed several monumental structures around a piazza; there's the cathedral, papal palazzo, town hall and town well. This mini-city, completed between 1459 and 1462, is a perfect example of Tuscan Renaissance style.

MONTALCINO, is most well known for its famous Brunello wine. We suggest that visitors eat here in one of the classic country estates owned by wine producer Fattoria dei Barbi. It is definitely a highlight of any journey through Tuscany. The traditional recipes are outstanding and visitors can sample not only the estate-produced Brunello, but also a nice range of other  wines produced under the Barbi label.
