Leader of the Band

Jeffrey (2nd left), with Oguchi Daihachi sensei (center, in red 'habi' coat), in Okaya, Japan [1996].

Jeffrey Teo started GINDAIKO in 2004. Before starting GINDAIKO, Jeffrey has no less than 10 years experience of Taiko drumming. He played regularly with a group of local Taiko enthusiasts. For the last 11 years, Jeffrey has been the leader of this Taiko group.

In 1996, Jeffrey was on an attachment with the Osuwa Daiko group in Nagano, Japan. He spent the 3 month attachment not only on learning to play, but also gain hands-on experience in Taiko drum-making. The founder of Osuwa Daiko is Oguchi Daihachi sensei. Oguchi Daihachi has been conferred the title of "Living National Treasure" by the Ministry of Arts in Japan. The Osuwa Daiko group performed at the opening ceremony of the Winters Olympics when it was held in Nagano. Oguchi Daihachi sensei is recognised as a major influence to modern Taiko drumming, and is respected not only in Japan, but also in drumming circles around the world. During his stay in Nagano, Jeffrey was under the tutorage of Oguchi Daihachi sensei.
