Involving Families

Many times teachers are often asked by parents, "How can I help my child with math at home?"  We usually launch into a series of suggestions involving games and manipulatives, without realizing parents are lost.  Just mention the word "geometry" and many parents are ready to run, conjuring images of that dreaded class in high school few people understood.

If we want a secure bond with families,it is our job to educate parents as well as students.  We need to SHOW parents how to help their child, not just tell them and expect them to understand.  Most parents never used manipulatives as a child, and don't understand how and why this helps their child learn those fact tables.

I have had success with two ways to educate and involve parents in a hands-on math program.
