Did Peter Step out on
the water or did he step out on God's word? I
think we can all agree that he stepped out on Jesus'
word. But, I have a question for you to
ponder. Why did Peter call out for Jesus to
call him to come to Him (Jesus)? We know
Peter stepped out of the boat on Jesus' word, come.
But, do we understand why he asked Jesus to tell him
to come. Was it fear, lack of confidence or
what?
The reason Jesus could walk on the water was because
he was confident in God's word. In Proverbs
12:21 it says "No harm shall come upon the
righteous.
I have tried to think of why I would ask the Lord to
tell me to come if I had been in Peter's sandals.
Could it be that because he had some fear and he
needed Jesus to give him a confident word in which
he could step out on? I think that sometimes
when I desire to do something I need a confident
word because I have some fears. I have a
desire, yet a tiny bit of fear will keep me from
doing what I desire to do unless I get a word of
confidence.
When Peter took his eyes off of Jesus (who is the
word of God, fear again gained control and he
lost his confidence. By allowing fear to
overcome his faith in God's word he began to doubt
and therefore began to sink.
This is a lesson in clinging to God's word. We
need to have God's word in our hearts and to always
keep our spiritual eyes on what God has promised us.
When the storms of our lives are about us as long as
we don't let fear overcome us, but keep focusing on
God's promises, we too can walk on troubled waters.
But if we, for a moment, loose sight of the promises
in God's word, fear can over come and put us into
doubting. Because of doubt we lose confidence
in God's word and we sink.
So fear not, fear only that you miss a promise of
God.
