The Vanishings
Chapter Nine

Sunlight
washed across Vegeta-chan’s face as he opened his eyes. He rubbed his eyes and
sat up. Vegeta-chan looked around. There was no sign of the fairies. He sighed.
There weren’t any sounds from the two tents, which meant Ryver and Cojiro were
still asleep. He looked over at Rapyd’s body, which was laying next to him. He
gasped. There, on her forehead, lay a single fairy’s wing. A fairy flew up to
him.
“We have decided to grant your request. A few days ago, a
fairy died, so we took the wing off of him,” said the fairy. Vegeta-chan
smiled.
“Thank you,” Vegeta-chan said.
“I wish you luck in gathering the rest of the ingredients. I
hope you save her,” the fairy said, flying off. Vegeta-chan walked over to
Rapyd and took the fairy wing off her forehead.
“I should probably keep this in something,” Vegeta-chan thought. He walked over to Ryver’s tent,
where her bag was sitting outside of it. Vegeta-chan started digging through
it.
“Ah ha! I can use this!”
thought Vegeta-chan, holding up a small bottle. He pulled off the top, dropped
the wing in, and recapped it. He heard Ryver stir in her tent.
“Heh. Won’t she be surprised,” Vegeta-chan thought, crossing his arms, holding the bottle. Ryver’s
tent flap opened as Ryver stepped out. She yawned as she stood up.
“Oh, Vegeta-chan! What are you doing up so early?” Ryver
asked. Vegeta-chan uncrossed his arms and held up the bottle.
“OHMYGOSH!” Ryver exclaimed, jumping up and down. “Is that
really what I think it is? How in the world did you get that? COJIRO!” Ryver
yelled.
“Hn…what?” Cojiro asked, crawling out of his tent.
“L-LOOK WHAT VEGETA-CHAN FOUND!” Ryver screamed, pointing to
Vegeta-chan. Cojiro rubbed his eyes, and blinked.
“Wow…” Cojiro trailed off. “We’d better get a move on, then.
The sooner we gather all of the ingredients, the sooner we can revive Rapyd,”
Cojiro said, starting to take down his tent.
“Right,” Ryver agreed, taking down her tent too.
“Where should I put the bottle?” Vegeta-chan asked.
“In here,” Ryver said, holding out her bag. Vegeta-chan gently
set it inside.
“Well, I guess we should go,” Cojiro said, slinging his bag on
his bag. Vegeta-chan nodded, and picked up Rapyd. He took one last look at the
Fairy Forest, and ran to catch up with Ryver and Cojiro.
“Ryyyyver!!” Vegeta-chan whined. “Why can’t we just fly up the
mountain?” asked Vegeta-chan, trudging up a steep mountain.
“For one thing, we’re on a volcano, and second of all, we
couldn’t fly and carry Cojiro, Rapyd and
our bags,” Ryver explained.
“Just a question,” Cojiro said, “How are we planning on
getting a fire dragon’s scale?” Vegeta-chan sighed. He knew that this would be
even more difficult than the last task. None of them would last very long in a
volcano, and they had no clue how they were going to get a scale off of the
dragon inside the volcano. The temperature quickly rose as they neared the top
of the volcano.
“Ah…here we are!” Ryver said as they stopped at the top.
“In…case you…haven’t noticed…it’s…hot…up here,” Cojiro panted,
sweating.
“Well we won’t be here for long, we just need the scale,”
Ryver said, peering down into the volcano.
“Hn…” she said, lifting her head back up. “I don’t see a
dragon. You sure this is the right volcano?” Cojiro nodded.
“I’m sure,” he said. Ryver looked in the volcano again.
“Fire Dragon! Please come out! We need one of your scales!”
Ryver yelled. She stepped back. Suddenly there was a rumble as a large, red
dragon came flying out of the volcano. Hot embers flew off the dragon as he
dusted himself off. He stopped dusting and glared at the group.
“You have disturbed my slumber,” the dragon said loudly.
Vegeta-chan and Cojiro took a step back, while Ryver stood firm, arms crossed.
“Well, we’re sorry we woke you up, but all we need is one of
your scales and then you can go back to sleep,” Ryver said. The Fire Dragon
stared at her like she had just turned orange.
“I…I am astonished you would even say such a thing,” said the
Fire Dragon. “But…,” said the Dragon, looking at Ryver’s tail, “Since you are
part Dragon, I’ll let you have one of my scales, for God knows what,” the Dragon
said. Ryver flew up to the dragon and quickly pulled off one of his scales. The
Fire Dragon winced.
“Thank you!” Ryver said, flying back down to Vegeta-chan and
Cojiro.
“Yea, sure,” said the Fire Dragon, flying back down into the
volcano.
“Here. Put the scale in the bottle,” Cojiro said, holding out
the bottle with the fairy’s wing in it. Ryver grabbed it and put the scale in,
then put it in her bag.
“Lets go!” Ryver said happily, walking down the mountain.
