All through the rest of the day, Vegeta and I debated over what should be done about our son. I was actually impressed that Vegeta actually cared and took his time to discuss futuristic issues for little Zegeta.
By night, Rayne had had enough for the experience of baby-sitting, so she handed my son over to me and went to bed- seemingly early.
"All right then, Vegeta. Remember our shifts" I yawned, rocking Zegeta back and forth in my arms. "Whatever" he growled, walking beside me for the short distance we had to go. "All right, then- this is Mommie’s room, boy!" I nuzzled my son’s cheek with my nose and pushed the door open. "Well Vegeta", I turned from inside the doorframe, "are you coming or not?" I arched a brow and strode into the musty room- a room that hadn’t been of use in nearly more than 2 years.
"Who’s this guy!?" Vegeta suddenly lashed out, sitting on the edge of my bed where my nightstand was. He had picked up a picture of Tenchi and I and was suspiciously overlooking it with an arched brow and a sour face. I turned from trying to lull Zegeta to sleep, leaving him on the other side of my bed. I walked over and thudded next to Vegeta, my eyes glazed over as I looked deeply at the picture. "That was Tenchi- my fiancé. You know, the one who died" I said, almost nuzzling Vegeta’s shoulder, I was so close. He just snorted and set it down recklessly, turning away but not looking at me, but at his feet. Zegeta started to cry when being left along for so long, so I crawled over my bed and reached for him, picking his head off the dusty mattress and helping him squirm his way back into my arms. "There’s a good boy, it’s almost sleepy time for you, Mister!" I winked at him, taking back my place next to Vegeta on the side of my bed. He glared back down at his son- wrapped in my arms and babied with his chubby face and his squinty eyes starting to droop.
"Hn…" Vegeta wheezed, squinting his eyes and trying to gulp down a heavy yawn.
"I wonder, Vegeta", I blinked, only staring at the baby "what ever happened to Turke and those guys?"
"Why should you care!? Why should anyone care about those sideshow freaks!?"
"Vegeta, get over it- Big Turke used to be my fighting partner, but ever since then, him and his gang of lizard breaths have been so obnoxious! I wonder if Master Link is still around here, too" I wondered, watching my son’s eyes close and carry him to sleep.
"Feh! I bet they were all drunk- just devilishly drunk" Vegeta snorted, crossing his arms and arching his back a-matter-of-factly.
"But, you remember what Doctor tae told us what they did to them! Something tells me they don’t settle right with you. Maybe we should look into that"- "Tomorrow" Vegeta growled, finishing my sentence. "Right" I puffed and then stood, blinking about to find something suitable as a crib for small little Zegeta.
"Hn" I put my free hand up to my chin and scowled in full concentration. "I’ll- be right back, Vegeta. You take care of Zeggie until I get back" "But"- "NO BUTS! JUST DO IT!" I yelled, shoving my son into his father’s arms and striding off with a fast pace out and into the dimmed-lit hall. Vegeta just blinked as Zegeta started to cry- a cry I could hear miles away.
I hurried as fast as I could to my father’s royal court, knowing he kept his servants there at night. I shoved open the doors, licked on the light and snapped my tail to wake them up on the cold floor.
"Y-Yes ma’am?" one of them stuttered when seeing my nose stuck down angrily at them. "I need a crib of some sort for my son. Please, would be so kind as to construct something for him?" my expression changed into a kind and cheerful face that said, ‘pretty please’ all over it. "Y-yes ma’am" said two of them jumping to their wobbly feet and darting into the shadows, bangs and clashes of wood and metal sounding off in pure darkness. I grinned when seeing structure- all fixed up like it had taken 10 days to build. "You guys are great! I’ll have Dad pay you extra this weak!" I winked, and started to walk. "Oh", I turned just about ready to twist the handle open, "and I’ll have him double that if you carry that to my room!" I grinned and then walked off, knowing they scurried to follow with the idea of money on both of their minds.
"Right- here!" I opened the door, but was very surprised at what I saw. "V-V-Vegeta?" I stuttered, his face covered with what seemed, glazed slobber. I panicked at first, grabbing his soggy collar and raising him off my bed. "WHERE’S MY SON!?" I growled, but he blinked through the thick saliva- trying to droop his eyes down to the small boy that was gnawing on his armor. I dropped Vegeta and grabbed up my son, giggling when I noticed how he was trying to "eat" Vegeta! "All right, set it down right over- there" I pointed, Zegeta now sitting in the cradle of my arms as I watched the small cub be placed at the foot of my bed. "Thanks guys! You’re great! First thing tomorrow, I’ll talk to Daddy about your triple payment!" I winked as they closed the door behind them and grinned toothily and disappeared down the dimmed hall outside my door.
"Oh, Vegeta" I sighed after I’d laid Zegeta to rest with a blanket covering his chubby body. I was trying to help Vegeta by wiping all the spit off him, but he seemed to flinch and be impatient with me. "HOLD STILL!" I roared, even though I was trying to keep quite so Zegeta could sleep. "Get off me, woman!" he tried to shove my tail away from him as I mopped the saliva from his brow with my scaly tail. "You wanna a walking jar of baby spit tomorrow!? The I suggest you sit tight and let me help!" I growled, keeping his shoulders still with my free hand- my knuckles turning white while I tried to stop him from scooting away.
"Now, Vegeta. Zeggie gets nervous when he’s with other people! So he cries, but he NEVER tries to EAT other people! It must be just you he’s so interested in" I sighed, wiping the last off his soggy Saiyan spandex shoulder. "Feh!" Vegeta huffed, scooting away. I yawned, flopping on my bed. "Well, Vegeta. I think it’s time we got some rest before the sun comes up" I groggily said, my eyes half open with exhaustion. He didn’t say a word, just turned his back and started to remove his Saiyan clothes. I turned my back to his and did the same, quickly retrieving and slipping on my skimpy pajamas.
I turned, full dressed to sleep, and stared towards Vegeta when seeing him lean up against the wall with his arms crossed over his bare chest. "Get over it, Vegeta! You made me do this before!" I hissed, pulling the covers over and hopping on my springy bed. He just growled under his breath and thudded next to me.
When both of us seemed situated on both sides of my bed, I quickly turned the light off and eased myself down into my bed- feeling Vegeta flop over and over before he finally gave out a heavy sigh and went to sleep with an easeful wheeze.
No sooner had the silence swept over my room, was it pierced with the sound of cries and screams. I shot up, my face doused with sweat. Vegeta shot up groggily, glaring at the darkness as did I. I flicked on the light and looked at him with heavily cracked eyes- and he glared back with the same sour look in his crackled bullet- beady eyes. "Your turn" we both coughed with a crackly tone, pointing a wilted finger at one another. I could tell it was going to be a long night…
When the sun rose, Vegeta and I were still on our feet- slumped over on both edges of Zegeta’s crib. It was a small flick in my ear that irritated me so much, I awoke with a growl that sent my obnoxious sister flying on my bed. "R-Rayne?" I squinted with a crackly voice down at her cheery but cackling face. "Oh, shut up" I sourly yawned, clobbering my head with my arms and trying to fall asleep again. "Hn… shu-shut u-up…." Vegeta muttered, turning his head and nodding off again. "Jeez! The only person who got some sleep in this room is pretty evident! My lil nephew!" she grinned, shoving Vegeta and I off the crib and picking him up. He instantly starting scream, nearly kicking Rayne in the face crankily. Vegeta shot up from the ground, his eyes wide and alert- I did the same. "What!? What!? What is it now!?" we both said in unison. "Gods, you guys! Chill!" she grinned, trying to stop his crying. "Rayne! Give him here!" I groggily outstretched a hand and snarled. "Oh no, sister- you’re sleepy. You and Vegetable Boy get your sleep" she grinned, tugging my baby away from me. "RAYNE! Give me my baby!" I growled, starting to stand. Vegeta cowered at first and then hesitated to stop her. "Back off, big boy! I got it under con"- Zegeta broke out into frantic, hysterical crying, making Vegeta and I fully leap to our feet and try to tackle Rayne without hurting our son. "GRAB-HIM!" Vegeta snarled, holding my sister down without damaging the small baby. I grabbed Zegeta and cradled him steadily, my eyes full of confusion, but compassion for retrieving him. "Rayne", I growled, "next time, leave it to the parents!"
"Not like I was gonna help, anyway. Just tryin ta be a good aunt" she muttered, getting to her feet after Vegeta let her go, and swaggering away- probably returning to sleep.
I sighed heavily and flopped onto the side of my bed with a heavy yawn. "Big boy, Mommie and Daddy need some sleep" I glared at him sleepily. Zegeta’s big round-green eyes blinked at me perkily awake.
"Ugh, boy" I sighed, shoving my back with a springy thud on the mattress. Vegeta sat on his side and started to droop his head in tire under the weight of his shoulders. "Maybe we shoulda handed the kid off to your sister" he wheezily yawned in an unusually quiet voice. "Nonsense! She’s sucha nut sometimes, I think she sleepwalks half of her life! Lil Zeggie here is just gonna hafta wait for his parents ta wake up when they do! Hn!" I nodded, squirming my way up to my pillow and trying to drift off with Zegeta sitting atop my stomach. "Feh…worth a try" Vegeta yawned, crawling up next to me and falling asleep just as quickly.
There was a dead silence until I felt my son’s pudgy hands pound on my face playfully. "No, Zeggie" I crankily tried to scold him with a calm voice. Zegeta’s pudgy fist seemed to crawl over to Vegeta and do the same, by the low growls that echoed wheezily in his chest as he tried to fall asleep…
<<3 years later>>
Zegeta had adapted very well to the surroundings of Galina over the past few years. He’d grown so much, that Vegeta and I were forced to put our education plans for him to work. Nonetheless, the last three years had been a struggle of keeping Zegeta tame on full moons. I couldn’t possibly think of cutting his tail off- since it just wasn’t orderly; even though Vegeta had experienced the removal of his tail at a young age, I wasn’t about to let my son walk through the same footsteps as his father all the time.
Rayne was no good baby-sitter, but neither were the others we tried to hire…
"Zegeta! What did I tell you about tying up your sitter!?" I glared down at mischievous young son. "Aw, Mommie- I’m sorry" he tried to apologize while fidgeting with his small hands and twisting his small feet around. I couldn’t help but be soft and let it go- for now. "Oh", I sighed with glassy eyes full of understanding, "all right. Run along and play while Mommie sees what she can do about your sitter". Zegeta bounded out of the Royal Dining Hall and leapt as high as his little feet would take him up the steps with a crisp thud each time his bare feet hit the step.
Vegeta glared up from his breakfast and sourly growled as I twisted my glare towards him.
"You’re too easy on him sometimes. He’s so spoiled by you, anyway! Ever since he was a little th-thing you’ve fed him too much and babied him up!" Vegeta always did criticize the way I took care of his son. I stood, my eyes fired up by his semi-insult of me being a mother. "LISTEN HERE, MISTER! I DON’T SEE YOU DOING A BETTER JOB! WHY DON’T YOU TRY DEALING WITH CHANGING FROM 1 TO 10 BABY-SITTERS A WEEK!!" I prodded Vegeta’s armored chest with a nimble finger as I stood and hovered down on him. Vegeta just stared up at me, looking from my whitened finger to my reddened face. "Why would you defend such a poor job? I’ll never know" he sighed and returned to eating with his cheeks stuffed after I’d pulled my finger away. "ARGH!" I growled with a heavy and dramatic sigh, sitting with a thud back down in my chair.
Not too many of the Galinians liked Zegeta- especially Turke, Armedais, and Saygan. I tried my best to keep Zegeta away from all three of them- but they had attempted too many times to kill him, that I started to get worried about staying on Galina any longer. Vegeta and I didn’t put up with much of what they tried- Zegeta would scream and yell- kicking and doing his best to punch them when they tried to steal him up from inside our room. I was proud, for once, to have a noisy son.
