She groaned as she got out of bed and headed towards the door in her pajama’s. “I’m coming!” She yelled as she came out of her room. She paused for a second and remembered what had happened last night. Tristan was home. She suddenly smiled thinking that the person at the door could very well be Tristan DuGray. She almost ran the rest of the way to the door. She threw the door open, and as she saw the person standing there, her smile quickly faded. It wasn’t Tristan, It was a federal express worker, there to drop off a package. “Morning miss, I have a package for Rory Gilmore.” The man said. “That’s me” She told him. “Well, If you could just sign here, this package is all yours.” Rory took the pen and clipboard and signer her name on the line with the X. “Have a good day Miss Gilmore” He said as he handed her the package and headed back to his truck. She stepped back inside and closed the front door. She set down the package and looked at it curiously. ‘Who would send me a package?’ She thought. ‘Hey, maybe it’s from dad!’ She thought, and then ran into the kitchen to grab a knife so that she could cut open the top of the box. When she finally got it open she looked inside. She pulled out several things. There was a huge bad of gourmet coffee beans, a hazelnut coffee candle, and a sealed envelope. After smelling the candle and the coffee beans, she grabbed the letter and tore it open. ****************************************************************** Rory, You’ve told me many times that coffee is your life, so I thought I would help you out a little in that department. I’m finally back in Hartford! I didn’t think that I would ever be this grateful to be here again. And since I am back... I would love to see you. If you can, meet me in the Hartford park at 12:30, by the big oak tree. Tristan ******************************************************************* Rory smiled as she put down the letter and ran to take a shower and get dressed, so that she could catch a bus and make it down there by 12:30. HARTFORD PARK Rory stepped of the bus at exactly 12:30. She had been to the park a few times before and she knew exactly what he meant by ‘the big oak tree.’ She used to read under it all the time, and when her mother and her came to the park for picnics, they would set it up under that tree. She was so excited that she started to run to where the tree was. When she got close, she saw a figure standing with his back towards her. She slowed down then, and took in the whole picture. The figure turned around and smiled when their eyes met. She couldn’t believe that he was standing right in front of her. She ran up to him and flung herself into her arms. They stood there foe a few minutes, just holding each other. When they finally let go of each other, Tristan started to speak. “Hello Mary.” He said with a smirk. “Hi Louis.” She said. “Wow, I can’t believe your really here.. When did you get in? Why didn’t you call? Are you here for good? And what happened to your hair.” She asked all in one breath. “Wow, slow down.” Tristan laughed as he put his had through what remained of his hair. “OK, I’ll answer all your questions, but first you have to come with me.” “Where are we going?” She asked. “It’s a surprise.” “So your not going to tell me?” “Hence the name ‘Surprise’,” He laughed “Fine” She said as she faked pouting. A few minutes later they were beside a beautiful pond in the middle of the park. On the side of the pond, under the shade of a tree, was a picnic that Tristan had set up before Rory came. “Wow.” She said. “I take that as a ‘this is great Tristan, thank you;” He smiled. “This is great Tristan, however, I’ll save the ‘thank you’ until I see what kind of food you brought.” “Fair enough.” They walked over to where the blanket was laid out, and the both sat down. Tristan started to unpack the basket that he had brought filled with food. “In the true spirit of a picnic, I have peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, and brownies for desert. Oh, and of course, we can’t forget the coffee.” He reached behind the basket and handed the smiling Rory a thermos filled with Coffee. “This IS really great Tristan, Thank you.” She said as she bit into her sandwich. After a few minutes of silent eating, Rory spoke. “So, back to my questions.” “Which were?” He asked. “Let’s start with, when did you get back?” “Last night.” “Why didn’t you call?” “I wanted to surprise you.” He said. “And that you did.” She smiled at him. “How long are you here for?” “I’m going back to Chilton.” “Seriously?” “Seriously.” “When did you parents decide this?” “When they didn’t make it to parents weekend, they called and said I was coming back, something about not wanting to tarnish the family name. Besides, the DuGrays have a long line of graduates of Princeton, and I don’t think that they accept graduates of Military School.” He laughed. “I guess not. And finally... the hair?” She chuckled. “What? You don’t like it Mary? I think it makes me look sexy if I do say so myself.” He laughed. “Only Tristan DuGray would think that he looked sexy in a buzz cut.” “Whatever Gilmore, you know you want me.” He teased. “Dream on, I go for guys with.. um.. hair.” “Good comeback Gilmore.” “I thought so.” She laughed. “I bet you did” He smiled. “So, Chilton starts next week, senior year.. can you believe it?” “God, don’t remind me, I’m just glad your going to be there this year.” “Yea, me too.” “Hey, so I’m supposed to meet my mom at Lukes for dinner tonight, do you want to come with me?” “Definitely.” End Part 4
