The Eastern Coast of Canada was settled early, because the fishing industry was so lucrative. This initial settlement occurred mainly in the 1600s & 1700's,  long before the interior of Upper Canada  (Ontario) had been opened for settlement. The Scots are strongly represented in Nova Scotia, the Irish in Newfoundland.
Ships were arriving in the Maritimes when the interior of the country was still primitive and unexplored.
