There are approximately 100,000 Gillespie families in all of Canada today. Many have ancestors that emigrated to this land from The British Isles in the 1800's, especially during the Irish Potato Famine. It was not until after 1869, and closer to 1900, that a wave of settlement headed to the Canadian Western Provinces. Many of these people were the children of the earliest emigrants that settled in Ontario. The first census out West was in 1881. |
