| *BUFFERS IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS* A buffer is simply a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base or a weak base and its conjugate acid. Buffers work by reacting with any added acid or base to control the pH. In order for a particular reaction to occur or occur at an appropriate rate, the pH of the reaction must be controlled. Enzymes are proteins and when the pH level is either higher or lower then the average rate the protein changes shape. Thus, causing buffers to be extremely important. |
