| Never one to leave well enough alone, however, I have struggled to come up with a system that does not contradict very much of what we hear in the series, and after a great amount of number crunching, have come up with the following: Microcenton = .1 second Also known as a flash, a tenth of a second is an important measure of both time and distance in space. As a measure of distance, about 30,000 km. Micron = 10 microcentons = 1 second Macrocenton = 10 microns = 10 seconds If we are going to use a base 10 system for clock-based measures of time, then there must be a unit that fills the gap between centon and micron. However, it might never be used (and never was in the seriesI made it up). Centon = 10 macrocentons = 100 microns = 1.6 minutes Millicenton = 10 centons = 16.6 minutes As milli means 1000, it can be suggested that this term was coined at a point when it was more applicable to distance than to time, somehow became associated to a period equal to 10 centons, and the name stuck. Centar = 10 millicentons = 166 minutes = 2.7 hours Megacenton (cycle) = 10 centars = 27.7 hours The term megacenton was used in a deleted scene in GI. Secton = 6 megacentons = 6.94 days Making the calendar system base 6 makes sense in light of the Germanic roots for the word yahren. Six in German is sechs. Quatron = 4 sectons = 27.78 days Okay, so right after we move to base 6 we break the model, but this just tells us that there are oddities in the time system, just as there are in some of our units of measure. Sectar = 6 sectons = 41.67 days = 1.37 months Yahren = 6 sectars = 250 days = .685 years This puts the 200 yahren lifespan at about 137 years: much more acceptable as a natural lifespan. |
