Beauty: A retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley
-An excellent version of my favorite fairy tale: a first person narrative by Beauty, who dislikes her ill-fitting nickname and describes herself as undersized, with huge hands and feet.  Especially good reading for girls hitting that uncomfortable in-between place.
The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede
          Dealing with Dragons
          Searching for Dragons
          Calling on Dragons
          Talking to Dragons
-A very, very funny series, full of improper princesses, practical no-nonsense witches, and magic carpets covered with pink teddy bears.  Bright pink.
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
-Simply required reading.  A classic of childrens literature.
The Redwall Series by Brian Jacques
           Redwall
           Mossflower
           Mattimeo
           Mariel of Redwall
           Salamandastron
           Martin the Warrior
           The Bellmaker
           Outcast of Redwall
           Pearls of Lutra
           The Long Patrol
           Marlfox
           The Legend of Luke
            Lord Brocktree

-some of my all-time favorite books.  Full of classic good vs. evil, warriors wielding great blades, and grim and horrible villains; except that the good guys are mice, squirrels, otters, hedgehogs, shrews, moles, and hares, and the bad guys are rats, toads, stoats, weasels, foxes, snakes, and other vermin.  Humor, adventure, and some jolly good accents!
The Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander
           The Book of Three
           The Black Cauldron
           The Castle of Llyr
           Taran Wanderer
           The High King

-What happens when an assistant pig-keeper losses his pig, and runs after her?  A grand adventure of course, with ditzy princesses, truth-stretching bards, and heroic princes thrown in for good measure, not to mention terrifying villains and mysterious old men
The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
           Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
           The Silver Chair
           The Horse and his Boy
           The Magicians Nephew
           The Last Battle
                      -Classics, pure and simple.
Catherine, Called Birdy by Karen Cushman
-A feisty, opinionated medieval girl is determined not to be married offand shes good at it, too.  The journal of Catherine, called Birdy.
