STORM RIDERS- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
AKA (
Wind and Cloud )
Based on a Chinese comic book, the story centers around two warriors, Wind (who has powers to manipulate the wind, like a tornado) and Cloud (who can control water) who eventually must confront the warlord Conquer, the main villain (played by Sonny Chiba), who have trained and used them to conquer other lands. Add to that bunch of flying Kung Fu / sword fights, melodrama, a love triangle, magic monkey, posessed arm, winding plot, some beautiful scenery, and you get a movie that works, feels, and as imaginative as comic books can get. Characters are well-done and although the plot is a bit convoluted (but hey, it IS from a comic), the movie continues to remain energetic and exciting. As kung fu fantasy movies go, the bigger-budget computerized visual effects are very well-done, one of the most stylish and creative I've seen, as it also opens up newer possibilities in action choreography.
LEGEND OF ZU- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
AKA (
Zu Warriors )
Good versus evil in the realm of the magical mountain Zu as director Tsui Hark returns to the territory that made him famous nearly 20 years ago.Tsui Hark revisits the story of Zu, which he previously put to film in 1983. Only this time, he's got a bigger budget, a lot more experience, and countless special effects tricks up his sleeve! Rumor has it that there are over 1600 special effects shots in this film! This is truly a great film to have on DVD, as the high quality format is perfect for experiencing Hark's magical fantasy world as he envisioned it.
TAI CHI MASTER- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
AKA (
Twin Warriors )
Tai Chi Master matches over-the-top melodrama with fantastical fight scenes. Jet Li and Chin Sui Hou play Junbao and Tienbao, two misfit monks who have been getting in trouble at their Shaolin temple since childhood. Tienbao's volatile temper and ego get them banished from the monastery, and the pair tries to make a new life for themselves in a nearby village. From here they take decidedly different paths. Tienbao joins the military regime of a ruthless eunuch ruler while Junbao joins a group of political rebels that includes Yeoh. Tienbao's violent quest for power erases his friendship with Junbao, his betrayal causing Junbao to go temporarily insane. During this period Junbao discovers Tai Chi Chuan, which prepares him for a final confrontation with Tienbao.
THE PERFECT WEAPON- ( MARTIAL ARTS )
Jeff Speakman stars as a guy trying to avenge the murder of an old friend. His friend is murdered by the Korean mafia and in finding the killer he has to deal with family issues from the past. A great look at American Kenpo. One of only a few true American Martial Arts.
CRYING FREEMAN- ( MARTIAL ARTS )
An ordinary man is kidnapped and trained against his will to be the world's best assassin, Freeman. After each killing, he sheds a tear for his victim, and becomes known as Crying Freeman. When his latest assassination of a yakuza member is witnessed by Emu, the mysterious killer captures her heart. At city hall, a masked killer assassinates Shimasaki in broad daylight. Emu recognizes him as Freeman, and knows that he will return for her life. But will Emu's love for a man she doesn't even know be enough to stop him?
THE CHINESE CONNECTION- ( MARTIAL ARTS )
AKA (
Fists of Fury )
Bruce Lee plays a student of martial arts who comes home to find his teacher is dead from a martial arts match. Filled with grief he comes to uncover a plot that may have made his teacher's death a muder. And this fuels his way to the ones who did it and his path to revenge.
FIST OF LEGEND- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
Fist of Legend is a 1994 production and a remake of The Chinese Connection (also known as Fists of Fury, which starred the great Bruce Lee). This film is set in 1937, when Shanghai was occupied by the Japanese and racial tensions were high. Li stars as Chen Zhen, who returns to Shanghai to avenge the death of his master, whom he learns was poisoned. His popular freestyle fighting technique and Japanese girlfriend do not endear him to his former friend, now his master's successor at the martial arts school.
IRON MONKEY- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
The corrupt officials of a Chinese village are continually robbed by a masked bandit know as "Iron Monkey" (Yu Rong Guang) named after a benevolent deity. When all else fails, the Governor forces a traveling physician Wong Kei Ying (Donnie Yen) into finding the bandit. The arrival of an evil Shaolin monk eventually brings the Physician and Iron Monkey together to battle the corrupt government. This is the prequal to the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA SERIES which Jet li plays Wong Fei Hung who is the son Wong Kei Ying.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA- ( KUNG FU THEATER )
The first of a popular series (
SIX in all-NOT including its prequal-Iron Monkey) starring the charismatic and athletically adept Jet Li. Li plays legendary folk hero Wong Fei Hong, a late 19th century southern Chinese healer and kung fu master. The story begins with Western powers (American, British, and French) encroaching on the city of Canton. Wong is asked by the Black Flag army to safeguard the town by creating his own militia of kung fu experts. His assistants include the butcher "Porky" (Kent Cheng), a Chinese-American named Bucktooth So (Jacky Cheung), and his westernized "Auntie" Yee (Rosamund Kwan), a non-blood-related childhood friend for whom he holds a special affection. But the Westerners aren't the only problem in Canton. The Sha Ho gang terrorizes local businesses and has begun dealing with the Americans in exporting Chinese for slave labor and prostitution. A down-on-his-luck kung fu master named Iron Vest Yim (Yan Yee Kwan) has decided he needs to defeat Wong to open a school and Leung Fu (Jackie Chan contemporary Yuen Biao), a traveling opera troupe groupie, just keeps getting in the way.
THE LAST DRAGON- ( MARTIAL ARTS )
A stunning example of 1980s camp cinema. One-name kung fu wonder Taimak plays Leroy Green, a.k.a. Bruce Leroy, a humble student of kung fu who has achieved the highest level of skill, but hasn't yet found his inner master. Wandering through the streets of New York in a Chinese peasant outfit, he accidentally becomes the protector of nightclub hostess/video jockey Laura Charles (played by former Prince protg Vanity, who also costarred in the trash classic Action Jackson). She's being threatened by a height-challenged mobster who wants her to play his girlfriend's video (the girlfriend is something of a Cyndi Lauper look-alike, played by Broadway star Faith Prince). Meanwhile, a man who calls himself Sho'Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, wants to kick Leroy's ass and prove himself the baddest kung fu master in town.
