Increased Number of Auto Thefts and Thefts from Vehicles

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA . . . Over the past few months the Prince William County Police Department has seen an increased number of auto thefts as well as thefts from vehicles including CDs, car stereos, and cell phones.   The most targeted vehicles tend to be Hondas and Toyotas, though everyone should be mindful regardless of the type of car they drive.  People who have invested in expensive auto accessories such as wheels, tires, stereos, and auto graphics are also more attractive to car thieves and these car owners may want to take extra precautions.  Many of the vehicles which have been stolen and which have had property taken from them, have been in front of people’s homes and apartment complexes and were left unlocked, so it is important to remember to secure your vehicle at all times.

With the summer season fully underway, many people have taken on a more relaxed attitude.  However, it is important that when it comes to safety and security we do not get too relaxed.  It is important to always remember:

·        Lock your vehicle, even if you are expecting to be away for only a few minutes.

·        Do not leave your purse, wallet, or keys in the vehicle when it is unattended.

·        Even with the sweltering heat of summer upon us, you should not be leaving windows down, not even a small amount.

·        It is also important to not leave your vehicle running when you run into a convenience store or some other place where you plan to be gone only a few minutes.

Besides these simple precautions there are additional devices on the market which can be purchased to secure your vehicle and its contents.  Systems such as On Star and Lojack and various brands of mechanisms which will lock into the steering column will further assist in the security of your possessions.  Taking even simple precautions such as these protect your belongings and your vehicle and will allow you to stay relaxed this summer.
