MS blaster worm, W32.
Printer friendly.
The latest computer pandemonium is due to a new worm. It is called W32.Blaster.worm by Microsoft. Microsoft operating systems 95,98 and ME do not appear to be affected, but NT, 2000, 2003, XP are.
More information is available at:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/virus/alerts/msblaster.asp
For non sewp Windows XP computers here are 4 simple steps to eradicate the worm
1. Stop the worm from running.
 Start Windows Task Manager:
This can be done by right clicking on the start bar and clicking on task
manager or pressing the keys (ctrl) (alt) and (delete) and clicking on task list.
Once in task manager select the processes tab, select the program msblast.exe and click the end process button. Click the yes button on the warning popup box. You should no longer see msblast.exe in the processes list.
2. Edit the registry to stop the worm from restarting.
Click on the Start button, Select run, Type in regedit, then click ok.
 Goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
At this location there is a key by the Name of "windows auto update"
msblast.exe I just want to say LOVE YOU SAN!! Bill. Right click on it and delete it. Make sure that you only delete this one key.
 Shut down regedit.
3. Remove the worm file msblast.exe
Using Windows explorer or My computer delete the msblast.exe file from C: \Windows\system32
4. Install the Microsoft security patch MS03-026.
This patch can be acquired from Microsoft at windowsupdate.microsoft.com or run the file Q823980i.EXE that I have attached to this email. It is the download version of the patch and can be copied to a floppy. ***NOTE this file is only for XP It will not work with other Microsoft O/S.
For other Microsoft O/S the procedure is basically the same but you will need a different patch for this particular vulnerability.
Personal comment:
It is very beneficial to check for critical updates from Microsoft and apply them to help prevent things like this from infecting your computer. Also an updated anti virus software package like Norton helps too. Or, you can always do as I, use MACINTOSH.
