The Giant Schnauzer

Or Reisenschnauzer's Brief History

All the Schnauzers are made up of three separate and distinct breeds all three stemming from the original Standard schnauzer. The Giant, standard and mini schnauzers. The Giant Schnauzer should resemble a larger and more powerful version of the Standard Schnauzer. It is strongly built, square in proportion of body length to height dog with a sturdy, and well muscled build. "Giants" have a dense wiry coat. They can be black or salt and pepper. Black giants are prevalent in the United States although we are seeing more pepper and salt as of late. Pepper and salts are more prevalent in Europe.

Giants are described as an undaunted defender but intelligent, calm, reliable and faithful, which makes for a wonderful balance. It's very important to train and socialize them properly. Keeping Contact with the breeder is very important as they understand the temperament of the dogs they have bred personally. thier input is very important and helpful.

It is believed that Giants were originally bred in the Bavarian highlands to be local cattle and sheep-herding dogs,  to be cattle drovers in the mid to late 1800's. The belief widely held is that standard schnauzers were crossed with a few breeds such as Black Great Danes and Bouviers des Fladres. to increase their size.

Later they were used widely as guard dogs in the butcher markets and breweries. I suppose this was because of their qualities discussed above and the commanding presence. Today they are used widely in Germany and Europe as police and watchdogs they are very intelligent and very trainable.

There is allot of very interesting information that can be found with the A.K.C. and Giant Schnauzer Club of America concerning Giant Schnauzers and how they even got to this country.

The first time we saw one was in the parking lot of an animal hospital and its stance was so impressive that we were taken immediately. The problem then was to find out more about the breed and to see if it was compatible with our life and family. Luckily for us it was.
