| In the spotlight:
July in Rome |
July
2006 allows us to get right in to the spirit of the
Estate Romana Summer Festival.
First off we should mention the important exhibitions that open this
month here in the Eternal City, such as "Scultura
lignea russa (Russian wooden scultpure)" and
"Immagini dal pianeta terra (Images from planet earth)" by Wim
Wenders.
The strength of the cartoon medium can be seen in
"Varie umanità (Varied humanities)", "...
sognare, forse ... (... dreaming, maybe ...)" on the other hand
offers visitors the chance to see the intricate costumes used on the
Shakespearean stage, and finally the show featuring
Cartier-Bresson’s portraits cannot be missed.
Musically speaking the month begins well with the
"Cornetto Free Music Festival" and ends even better with the
"Telecomcerto", a huge annual live concert held
at the foot of the Colosseum that this year will feature
Billy Joel and Bryan Adams.
Many other major home-grown and international singers and bands will
perform in concerts around the city this month, such as
Depeche Mode, Bob Geldof
(who will perform at the Auditorium), Tracy
Chapman, Edoardo Bennato,
Alex Britti, Ivano Fossati,
Carmen Consoli, Negramaro
and Bob Dylan.
The "Romarock" event at the Capannelle venue
will host Franco Battiato,
Negrita, Massive Attack,
Sean Paul and Daniele
Silvestri, while the Villa Celimontana Jazz
Festival will see the likes of Incognito
and the Mike Stern Band play in its cool and
leafy setting.
Classical music fans will not be disappointed either, what with the
operas being staged at the ancient Baths of Caracalla
and the concerts held as part of the "Concerti per
Roma capitale" and the "Notti Romane al Teatro
di Marcello" series (the latter held below the Theatre of
Marcellus).
Theatre moves outdoors this month with the usual summer appointments
such as "Roma che ride" and
"All'ombra del Colosseo", and the plays put on at the
Globe Theatre in the Villa Borghese park.
Many artists will take part in the various initiatives:
Amanda Sandrelli and Grazia
Di Michele will perform in "Solisti del teatro
(Theatre soloists)"; Giuliana Lojodice
and Daniele Formica will enliven the
"Effusioni Sonanti" event, while
Max Giusti and Debora
Caprioglio will take part in "Cosmophonies".
It would be impossible to point out all the events on in Rome this month
but we have to point out a few more: "Il Drago e la
Farfalla (The Dragon and the Butterfly)" - a festival of
Vietnamese culture, "Notti di cinema a piazza
Vittorio" (a cinema festival held in Piazza Vittorio), the
nocturnal cultural events put on at La Sapienza University, the
"Golden Gala", the fashion shows of
"AltaromAltamoda", and the "PlateaEstate"
and "rEstate all'Eur" outdoor summer
entertainment venues. |

From 14 Jul to 27 Aug: Wim Wenders. Immagini
dal pianeta terra (Wim Wenders. Images from planet earth)
Wenders is a great film director but also a great photographer. About 60
of his shots will be on show in this exhibition, some of them in a large
5m format. Wenders loves to travel with his camera and immortalise
landscapes and sights that touch him. In all the images man is almost
completely absent. The shots capture moments without giving them a
context, freezing scenery in time in order to keep its essence intact.

and one silks)
Danilo Maestosi’s one-man show is a triumph of Eastern atmospheres
exuded from the very different creations – oils on canvas, acrylics on
canvas, pastels, collages – on display. In his work Maestosi speaks of
dreams and memories, stories in which the line between reality and
fiction is blurred, in which it is possible to admire the mustard colour
of desert sand, the red dusks and the stars of the African skies.

Until 16 Jul: Il colore si stende asciuga
spessice, si riposa (Colour is applied, it dries, thickens and rests)
A unique procedure that brings about unique creations such as those of
Ettore Spalletti: the artist uses wood on which he spreads powder of
plaster-like consistency and colours in various blues, greys and pinks.
The colouring process is not decorative in intent but becomes a
protagonist, taking on its own form and structure in the work. Villa
Medici is filled with paintings, sculptures and extremely evocative
spaces in which, as Spalletti himself says, "the colour looks for more
colour inside". Tue-sun h11-19. €8, reduced €4,50

nel fumetto indipendente (Varied humanities. Contemporary life in the
independent comic)
Maurizio Ribichini, Davide Reviati and Stefano Misesti are part of the
most free and independent strain of Italian contemporary comic creators.
They all have different styles and are interested in different themes
but are all united by a desire to represent contemporary society in all
its various facets. The creations of these three artists born in the 60s
have afforded an autonomous and expressive dignity to the comic, which
is often perceived or written off as an entertainment sub-genre.

The gem of the show is the costume worn by Richard Burton in ‘The Taming

This is a fascinating exhibition that allows us insight into those
performances where the costume is all-important, as well as symbolic and

varied materials such as pills, butterflies and pages from the Gospels.
David Salle, on the other hand, reinterprets the frescoes of the Sistine
Chapel in a modern key. Finally, Jenny Saville, the English artist who
lives between London and Palermo, has created three large canvases
drawing inspiration from the insight of suffering as a means of
expiation and catharsis. Tue-sun h9-19. Museum + exhibition: €6,

city of Rome as they were during the papacies of Urban VIII of the
Barberinis (1623-44), Innocent X of the Pamphilis (1644-55) and
Alexander VII of the Chigis (1655-66), and through the works of Bernini,
Borromini and Pietro da Cortona. In a century marked by political crisis
and the marginalisation of the papacy, the Baroque era afforded Rome
artistic supremacy in terms of the exceptional revolutionary force of
its language: the innovations proposed by Bernini and Borromini were
propagated not only in Europe but also in Latin America. Tue-sun

The eye of the century" was the name given to Cartier-Bresson, a
photographer who captured the atmosphere and soul of an era in his work.
The subjects of his photos were famous personalities such as Christian
Dior and Pablo Neruda, but also simple passers-by and children, views
and landscapes. All these elements make up this two-part exhibition,
which is accompanied by books, documents and magazines. The simplicity
of the style of his photos manages to make the essence and soul of
people and places emerge fully. Tue-sun h9-19. €9, reduced €5,50

Apertura del museo Carlo Bilotti (Opening of the Carlo
Billotti Museum in the Villa Borghese Orange House)
Rome’s town hall has once again offered a great gift to art aficionados
by restoring the former Casino dei Giochi d’acqua in Villa Borghese. The
building was damaged at the end of the 1800s during the French invasion,
losing in this way its decorative elements, and was then subsequently
rebuilt and transformed to stock citrus fruit. Now the Aranciera hosts
the collection of Italian American art collector Carlo Billotti,
inluding works by De Chirico, Andy Warhol, Giacomo Manzù and Larry
Rivers; important works that are being given prominence in this
impressive new exhibition space. Tue-sun h9-19 |

| In the spotlight: March in Rome |
In March Rome offers a whole
torrent of events for the public. And at the same time it launches a range
of new initiatives: first and foremost, the "10 great
exhibitions" series at the Galleria Borghese, which will begin this
year and last until 2015.
Continuing in the same vein, big name
retrospectives on in Rome at the moment include Antonello
da Messina, Modigliani, Canaletto, Heinrich and Thomas
Mann, Enzo Cucchi, Carlo
Mollino, Erlich and Dessì. Worth a special
mention also is the exhibition dedicated to director Tadeusz Kantor and one called "La
rinascita del Parlamento (The rebirth of the Italian Parliament)"
that commemorates the anniversary of the Constituent Assembly and the
drafting of the Constitution. Finally March is the last month in which
to catch the Zandomeneghi exhibition.
Moving on to all things musical, Rome has its pick of live
performances this month. Notably, Lou Reed, Renato Zero, Deep Purple, Simple Minds, Gianna Nannini,
Mango, Paoli and Vanoni,
Modena City Ramblers and Almamegretta all perform in town in March.
And on
the classical music front too aficionados will not be disappointed.
Numerous events will be held at the Auditorium – among which the concert
of Raimondi and Magiera is
worth a particular mention – and the Teatro dell’Opera performs Giselle and Mary Stuart and hosts
several soirées dedicated to the music of Shostakovich.
Keeping us glued to our theatre
seats this month are, among others, Paolo Rossi,
Biagio Izzo, Vincenzo
Salemme, Paola Cortellesi, Alessandro Preziosi, Lello Arena,
Mariangela Melato, Giulio
Scarpati, Anna Mazzamauro, Rodolfo Laganà, Marisa Laurito,
Simona Marchini, Enzo
Iacchetti and Gianluca Guidi.
Also
not to be missed is the "Mostro Comico" series of
comedy nights, and other musical shows such as Momix
Dance, Concha Bonita, "Menopause" and "C'era una volta
scugnizzi".
For avant-garde visual art and electronic
sounds look no further than Sensoralia. Sports fans will be excited
to learn that the annual and atmospheric Rome
marathon is held this month, as well as the last matches of the Six
Nations Rugby Tournament. |

figures of contemporary abstractionism. His creations blend luminous
effects and the use of strong substances and materials such as bitumen and

Erlich has created a series of very striking installations for MACRO, such
as the piece called 'Doors', made up of a sequence of four rooms. The
rooms are dark but the light that one can see under the door of each one

Roma Barocca: Bernini, Borromini, Pietro da Cortona
(Baroque Rome: Bernini, Borromini, Pietro da Cortona) Organised
as a visual journey thought the most important places in the city of Rome
as they were during the papacies of Urban VIII of the Barberinis
(1623-44), Innocent X of the Pamphilis (1644-55) and Alexander VII of the
Chigis (1655-66), and through the works of Bernini, Borromini and Pietro
da Cortona. In a century marked by political crisis and the
marginalisation of the papacy, the Baroque era afforded Rome artistic
supremacy in terms of the exceptional revolutionary force of its language:
the innovations proposed by Bernini and Borromini were propagated not only
in Europe but also in Latin America. The exhibition contains virtual
reconstructions and large-scale models. Various sections of the show will
be dedicated to the architectural styles of the time, the decorative arts,
music, workshops, science, and to time and perspective as the art of
creating a space of illusion.
