Splash 'n' Dash: Rd 1 - Heats!

2003 FINA World Swimming Championships

It's Day 4, the halfway mark of the 10th World Championships.

There has been some absolutely awesome racing by the Australian's so far! - World Records to Matt Welsh (50 'fly - World Champion) and Leisel Jones (100 breast semis - Bronze medalist), The Thorpedo (Gold 400 and 200m Free.), Alice Mills and her 200m I.M silver, with Australian and Commonwealth records to go with it! --- to name but a few!

Giaan Rooney will get her first taste of evening action tomorrow morning AEST as she swims in the 50 backstroke semi finals.
Posting a time of 29.25 sees her qualify 10th fastest. Sophie Edington narrowly missed a semi's spot, with her time of 29.49 3/100ths from being in the top 16 - A great effort all the same!
Fastest qualifier is IIona Hlavackova in 28.67.
A big Goodluck for Giaan! :D

Elka Graham is a great chance to medal in the 200m freestyle, also to be swum tomorrow morning.
American Lindsay Benko has qualified fastest (1:59.13), with Elka's time (1:59.37) second fastest, putting the Aussie in a fantastic position to claim the Gold.
The final in itself is a massive achievement for Graham, who has had a tumultuous preparation with a health scare seeing her certain to miss the meet, before a second opinion saw her join the team in Germany, before more dramas when her coach Brian Sutton was stood down from the team on disciplinary reasons.
Despite all this, "Elks" swum absolutely out of her skin on Night 1, with a big P.B. in the 400m freestyle, along with a great swim to help the Aussies grab bronze in the 4 X 100m freestyle relay.
I'm really looking forward to this race and know Elka will do us all proud! :)
Wouldn't it be fantastic if the title held by Giaan, who of course is not racing the event, could be won by a fellow Australian! :) - Only time will tell, but go get'em Elka! :D

Other Australian's swimming tomorrow include Ian Thorpe and Ashley Callus in the 100m free. semi's, Brenton Rickard and Justin Norris in the 200m butterfly final, headlined by world record holder, American Michael Phelps, while the Men's 200m breast. and Women's 200m 'fly semi's will also be on, with the night ending with the Men's 4 X 2 freestyle relay -- another great race to look forward too! :)

Happy watching to all those doin' the 2am start ;) and Let's go Aussies!!!
