Backstroke bummer: Rooney, Coughlin miss semi's

2003 FINA World Swimming Championships

Day 2 has bought some surprises already, with Natalie Coughlin, World record holder in the 100m backstroke, failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the event, posting a time of 1:03.18, well shy of her WR swim of 59.58.

The news doesn't even begin to get much better, with Giaan Rooney also missing the cut with this morning's swim, 1:03.30, seeing her in 23rd place at the completion of the heats.

Another big name not swimming in tonight's semi's is American Haley Cope (1:03.45 - 25th), while South Australian Melissa Morgan posted a time of 1:03.52 which in ranking in at 26th, sees no Australian or American swimmers in tonight's women's backstroke action.

While I'm not exactly lauding the feats of the swimmers who have a spot in the semi's tonight, it's a big Congratulations to them all.

My Comments (as posted on USA-Swimming forums):

Wonder what's doin' with Rooney as well ... :( ... Talk before the Worlds was that her coach was confident she had the potential swim a P.B. ... Hopefully it's nothing too HUGE and Sindelfingen isn't some graveyard for her form ...!
As :O as it is, I'd be very surprised if it an indication of how these two are to swim the rest of the meet ... the best is yet to come!

In true seriousness, my comment about Sindelfingen is of course a joke (and a poor one at that!) - I really hope Giaan doesn't take this too hard or anything, at only day two of the Worlds it'd be horrible for her to get too down about it and have it affect her for the rest of the meet.

With the sprint splash 'n' dash still to come, and the relays, there is plenty of time for Giaan to make amends for any disappointment she (presumably!!) may feel.

After 2001, we all know what you can do on the Worlds stage, despite this little downer, You can do it! C'arn Roons!!
