SUPER G - GIAAN ROONEY FAN SITE

Session 1 - Gee-Whiz! :D

2003 Telstra Grand Prix 2, July 21-22, Sydney

Grand Prix Swimming hit Sydney today with yours truely in attendance for session 1 - here's a little wrap on how Giaan went and the other "noteable notes" ;)

First up for Giaan was the 100m back, and after reading a quote on the IQ website from Ian Pope about some work being done in training on starts and turns - I guess you could hardly call it a surprise now could you! ;) - but it was still very good to see, and yes, it was evident (in my opinion anyways...!) that the start is looking good! :D
Rooney was the last swimmer to surface from the start, if not then she was definitely one of the last, and looked strong and relaxed with her stroke looking nice and efficent as she took the first 50 in 30.93 in front of Sophie Edington in 31.44 with Belinda Nevell turning in third in 32.44.
It was more of the same for Giaan as she bought it home to record a victory in 1:03.05 - in the middle of hard training, just four weeks out from the Worlds, she continued to look the goods with the second 50 swum strongly with the touch at the finish also a good one - no complaints from our vantage point ;-) - granted, we were more towards the opposite end of the pool, but we did manage to see Geoff Huegill's not-so-perfect touch in the 50m fly - if anyone else happened to see the small item on the swimming on Sports Tonight, I'm sure you'll know what I mean...! ;)
Sophie Edington was second in 1:04.14, with Belinda Nevell third in 1:05.16 [full results]
Speaking to Kurt Hanson, poolside MC, Giaan when asked something like what she though about the Free & Back she said she like both of them and that her training was going well and she was feeling strong with her stroke - go you good thing! ;-)

Giaan's other swim in the morning session was the 4 X 50m medley relay for team Red where she also swum well - 29.something(!) from memory, in what was a good close race with team White the narrow winners - one one-hundreth of a second! - over Red finishing in 1:56.00 Blue posted 1:56.44.
Kurt Hanson spoke with Red's Libby Lenton who pretty much said all was going well in the lead-up for the Worlds next month. That's what we like to hear! ;-)

Someone who's preparation for Barcelona was unfortunately definitely not going as planned was that of Elka Graham, who has spent the last week in Royal Prince Alfred Hospital having all sorts of tests taken after feeling faint last Saturday, reports out today said that the cause still hadn't been identified, but with tonight's news giving Elka the all-clear, that's great to hear! Greg Hodge was also shown in a short clip saying he spoke with Elka this morning and she should be back in full training in the pool on Monday.

More to come, as I'm sure to remember some stuff later... :-)
