THE STORY SO FAR...
The following night Giaan and Elka Graham both qualified for the 200m Freestyle final after a self-confessed much sleepless night following the heartbreak of the disqualification.
Next was the 200m Freestyle final where the Aussie girls set out to make up for the disappointment of the relay ...
Did Giaan what!.
"In Lane 5, we have a New World Champion, representing Australia, Giaan Rooney!"
Once again Australia and this time World saw Giaan's sheer delight after victory. This time after the 200m Freestyle with a time of 1:58.57.
Not standing on the dias at any major meets between the 1998 Commonwealth Games, it was a fair time between drinks for Giaan Rooney, but the wait was worth it.
Rooney displayed her back end form with a killer last-50m to bring home the Gold for Australia.
Her big smile was in great contrast to the dismay on her and the other Australian's faces after the relay horror - and as the saying goes 'smile and the world smiles with you' -- the World (or at least Australia!!) sure smiled with Giaan that night!. "I don't think you'll wipe the smile off my face for a few days yet..." said Rooney.
That night the Aussie Men's 4x200m team won Gold, and in a nice touch dedicated their win to the Women's team.
A full list of Giaan's results from the 2001 World Championships can be found in the Results and Stastics section.
Next were the 2001 Australian Short Course Championships which were staged in Perth.
Rooney gained silver in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:57.12s and Gold in the 50m Backstroke (28.17s)
After another short break came the Goodwill Games in Brisbane.
Racing was in a style quite familar
to Americans as it is done a lot in their collegiate system.
