SUPER G - GIAAN ROONEY FAN SITE

THE STORY SO FAR...

A silver in the 200m freestyle at the 2001 Aus. Championships saw Giaan slightly disappointed as she had prepared specifically for that race - but the 2nd placing still saw her along with Elka Graham, gain a individual place at the World Championships.

In a somewhat surprising result Giaan placed 1st in her maiden outing of the 400m freestlye.

In other results Rooney gained a silver in the 100m Backstroke.

Next stop, Fukuoka 2001 World Championships!!

At the 2001 World Championships, Giaan contested the 200m Freestyle, 400m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke as well as the 100m and 200m Freestyle relays, 100m I.M relay.

The 200m Freestyle relay saw argueably the most talked about point of the Championships.

The Australians (Elka Graham, Linda MacKenzie, Petria Thomas and Giaan Rooney) all had fantastic PB times with Graham posting the 2nd fastest Australian time in history (behind the retired Susie O'Neill) of 1:58.54.

Unfortunately disaster struck when the girls jumped into the pool to congratulate Rooney and celebrate the Gold ... before the final competitor had finished ... this resulted in disqualification and utter devestation with the team being learning of this while being interviewed about their great win, they were understandably left in dismay.
