Also, watch for some subtle changes on the race report from the relay gold ... early mornings can make the brain tell the fingers to type some stuff that needs a little editing ;) (If it's the first time in Australian Olympic history, saying it's the first time in Olympic history would suffice! :-)
AUSSIE GIRLS WIN GOLD
Sensational swims propell team to victory in World record time!
Giaan Rooney, Leisel Jones, Petria Thomas and Jodie Henry are Australia's latest swimming Gold medallists after this morning (AEST) caping a fantastic meet for Team Australia, winning the Women's 4 x 100m medley relay
for the first time in Olympic history [more] added [Aug 22]
Thursday August 19 - P.M:Jodie Henry is Australia's newest WORLD RECORD HOLDER after breaking the 100m freestyle mark, previously held by Libby Lenton, this morning (AEST) on her way to victory in the second semi final, stopping the clock at 53.52s, slicing 0.14s the previous world's best.
It was mixed fortunes for the Aussie girls in the glamour event, Libby failing to qualify for the final, her 55.17s after never really recovering from a slow start in semi final one, it saw the Queenslander's time 9th fastest at the end of the semi final stage, just hundreths of seconds from the 8th and final qualifiying position. While it's hard not to feel for Libby, it's fantastic news for Jodie, who goes into tonight's (Fri. morning AEST)
final as a firm favourite, but it will no means be a easy, she will face stiff competiton from, amongst others, Holland's Inge De Bruijn and Natalie Coughlin (USA) the 2nd and 3rd fastest qualifiers respectively.
Lenton campaign continues as joins Engelsman as Australia's representives in the 50m free heats beginning Friday night (AEST), where I'm sure she will bounce back.
It's not often Rooney news gets regulated to the second point on an update but, Giaan Rooney swum in the heats of the 4 x 200m freestyle relay which was also her opportunity to swim her way into the team for the final, but somewhat surprisingly (for me anyway!) she swum a 2:02.34 - well off what was required to qualify herself into the finals team. So while G's 100m backstroke form
seems to be right up there with succesive PB's in the heats and semi finals of the individual event, whether the longer distance played a part, or she simply was unable to produce the goods on the day is the story. The Aussies represented by Alice Mills, Shayne Reese, Elka Graham and Petria Thomas finished a gallant 4th in what was a history making
final, as the American girls wiped the drug-tainted World Record of the East German team from the record books, a fantastic race and deserved victors! See below for some news reports :)
This is quite the speed update (although it's gettin' long!), I'm hoping to do a bigger one over the weekend, but lastly, a big Good luck to all the Aussies competiting tonight, which includes bubbly Brooke Hanson (Congrats on the 100 silver!) and Leisel Jones (Ditto for the 100 bronze!) in the 200m breast., the aforementioned Jodie Henry as well as other Aussies in semi final action, Mel Morgan and Fran Adcock in the 200m back and Geoff Huegill in the 100 'fly.

Sunday August 15 - A.M : The Aussie team have had a glorious opening night in the pool, with Gold to Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett taking silver in the Men's 400m free, while the Aussie Women's 4x100 free relay team of Alice Mills, Libby Lenton, Petria Thomas & Jodie Henry, have emulated the feats
of the 1956 Olympic relay team, taking Gold in a WORLD RECORD TIME - it was such a fantastic emotion charged victory for the girls - fantastic to see them win it - it's been a long time between drinks, and I'd have to say easily the swim of the night for mine, but Thorpey's tears at his win were up there too!
Also, Super G ;-) will begin her 2004 Athens campaign with the heats of the 100m backstroke today, and will be joined by fellow Aussie Marieke Guehrer in heat number 5 - to be swum at about 5:10pm AEST (10.10am local time) - so be sure to tune into Chanel 7 from 5pm for all the swimming day 2 heats action!
All the best to not only Giaan but all the Aussies -- Go get 'em!!!

... do quotes from Brian Sando, swim team Doc., over our deputy chef de mission, give more cause for 'concern'? While this article mentions Alice & Jodie have been isolated from the team, no mention of G being under the 'illness cloud'...
Check out the Australian Swimming website for a few stories from team camp in Germany while they also have a pretty cool photo gallery capturing the action as well. added [Aug 7]
After the very latest Olympic news? Check out SMH and Fox Sports - (wish I could update as often as those guys do!) added [Aug 7]
With the 2004 Olympics just 5 weeks away, as part of their preparations the Australian Swimming team has spent the week in camp at Brisbane, with two of the Grand Prix style meets that have become a part of the team's lead up to major competition being staged, this time held at the Chandler Aquatic Centre.
The meet wound up last night in spectacular style with a World Record to Leisel Jones in the 200m breaststroke, while Giaan has also shown impressive form at the two meets, in heavy training she has been swimming close to her PB times - great to see! :)
Please see below for the latest, with some analysis to come soon :)
After a bit of a busy time has seen me unable to update in a while ... it's update time ... As Giaan and other members of the Aussie team head to Europe to race in the Mare Nostrum series ... see below for all the details!
