This real-life husband and wife do have chemistry on the big screen just not the kind of chemistry I can easily relate to. Steve "Archetypal Male" McQueen and Ali "Archetypal Female" McGraw seem capable of repopulating the earth in the event of a nuclear winter, but don't look for a lot of easy-going Tom Hanks-ish one-liners to ease the trauma of making it through a day when most of Texas law enforcement is working overtime to shove yer ass through a salami grinder.
They rob a bank. Everything goes wrong. They spend two hours being shot at, shooting back, being dumped outta the back of a garbage truck, and bickering between themselves, eventually wandering into Mexico about a half-million richer than they were at the opening credits.
McQueen IS Hollywood he bleeds celluloid. Sweet li'l coquettish Ali acts with all the finesse of an average junior high school production. Fortunately, director Sam Peckinpah must be aware of this, since McGraw says about 35 words in the whole film. Between words she pouts seductively. Good enough.
