| June 23, 2002 Դϴ (I think that's right) o-nu-ree-saeng-il-im-ni-da (Today is my Birthday!) And I really can't say I'm overjoyed about it. It's kind of strange celebrating your Birthday in another country. None of your best friends around, not to mention it sucks not having family around either. I went into Seoul yesterday to watch the Korea-Spain World Cup game. If you didn't know, Korea won. Which puts them into the final four. Now let me just say that this country is friggin insane! They say there were arond 2 million people downtown watching the game on the streets around City Hall. And if you didn't see the news, it's was quite a sight to see. I took a lot of pictures and some video clips which I'll put up as soon as I figure out how to convert them to .mov files. At 3am people were still dancing around, jumping on cars, shooting fireworks into the air, and generally screaming at the top of their lungs. It was out of control. I bought some fireworks and then proceeded to point the wrong end into the air and nearly burnt some people. Although they didn't seem to mind... This is pretty much how it's been for the last couple weeks. People dancing in the streets every time Korea wins a game. The kids at school are out of control. I've never seen so many people. During the penalty kicks there were some people in the bar too nervous to watch the screen. It made for some interesting pictures. I watched the game at this small little coffee house with a massive TV. Had to pay $12 to get in but the drinks were free. Softdrinks and coffee you would assume but no, beer was free too. I'm sure I drank my share...and some other peoples share too. I nearly got into a fight after the last game. I was with Bret and some Korean guy seemed to take exception to the fact that he was American. We were sitting in front of the Family Mart next to our apartment drinking beer at 3am with some girls we met on the street. This guy came up to our table like 5 times asking which country we were from. The next thing I see is him and Bret rolling around on the ground. I went running over and his two buddies were pondering jumping in. Although they backed down pretty quick when I got there. Probably cause the three of them's combined weight was most likely less than mine, heh heh. To make a long story short, the girls they were with dragged them away and that was the end of it. So on Tuesday Korea plays Germany. I suppose that means I get some more time off work to watch the game. It it ought to be a great game. Although I'm obviously not Korean. it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement and feel like a Korean when you see all that is happening here. You read the newspaper and you read at least one story about someone having a heart attack during when Korea scored. I don't know what's going to happend if Korea gets into the final. Although the way that Brazil has been playing, it's hard to imagine anyone beating them. I'm happy cause it means that either Korea or Germany will be in the 3rd place game which I have a ticket for. Although I still haven't picked up my ticket, or booked a train ticket, or figured out how I'm getting home. I suppose I'd better get on that soon. But right now I'm starving so all I can think about is lunch. Can't remember what else I've been up to but if it comes to me I'll come back...later. Have a peachy day!! |
