| February 25, 2002 It's Sunday night...or acually Monday morning I guess....U.S. & Canada face off in 4 hours...not sure how I'm gonna watch this game, I just know that I have to. Comes on at 5am here which is too late to stay up and too early to get up...so I dunno, I'm going to set my alarm anyways. Either way....GO CANADA!!! I got a couch yesterday(used)...really nice(although what do I know about couches), it was cheap but it's really too big....my little apartment just got a smaller. Problem with the couch is that it was filthy, where it was stored, it got covered in dust and dirt. They said that they'd wash it before they delivered it, only problem is that there idea of cleaning it was to spray it a little with water. So I spent this morning cleaning it but it looks good now. The Korean word for 'couch' is 'so-fa'...that's a word I bet I can remember. I can't believe how many pubs ther are in my area. Literally 6 or 7 within a two minute walk from my place. I guess Korean's like their drinking, but then again who doesn't. Does it seem that all I ever talk about is drinking? Maybe cause that's all my hooligan friends back home understand...heh heh. I'm beginning to adapt to the spicy food...oddly I've found that really spicy food seems to turn my face red. I've been eating a ton of 'Kim-bap'...it's meat and/or vegetables, depending on the kind you order, wrapped in rice and seaweed. I still haven't tried the squid I see them frying up at food stalls but I will eventually. I like being adventurous but I'm not brave enough to go into a restaurant and point at a menu unless they have pictures. I ended up in Hongdae again this weekend. The other teachers and I went out for drinks Friday night but the married ones went home early and I went with another teacher into Seoul. She knows a lot of people in that area it seems. I was running out of money so I left in search of a bank machine...on the way I met two Korean girls that spoke English and walked around with them for awhile but I couldn't get money out of the machines nearby so I had to leave them...ah well. Most ABMs don't access my account back home so I had to find a subway station where they always work. The only place I knew for sure was back in Sinchon so I walked all the way to Sinchon (20 minutes) to get money but then I couldn't find my way back to Hongdae...I asked people but they kept pointing in different directions. "Where do I find" is one of the few Korean phrases I know. Some guy must have been heading to Hongdae (or he took pity on me) cause he came back to me and motioned me to follow him. We jumped into a cab and ended up in Hongdae, not sure why I didn't think of that...he even paid for the cab and wouldn't take any money from me when I offered...mind you it was only about $2. Although by the time I got back to the area it was almost 4am and the area was winding down, so I just went home. Bars don't really have an official closing time, they just sort of close when the place gets quiet it seems. It was at the bank machine that I noticed that my Visa card was missing, kind of a scary thought but when I got home I phoned Visa back home and nothing had been put through my account. Not sure where it went...I'm thinking that I must have dropped it cause nothing else is gone from my wallet. Another adventure getting home...this time I knew the area the cab took me but I'd never tried to get home by car. I found out the streets are kind of complicated so it took me awhile to direct him through the maze. Although the cab ride home Saturday night went smoothly so I should be okay from now on. I went into work for a bit Saturday & Sunday...didn't have to go but I wanted to finish preparing tests for this week and the other teachers and I share two computers so I didn't want to leave it till the last minute. It's funny though I don't think the manager at my work ever takes a day off cause everytime I've gone in, he's been there..really gotta admire the Korean work ethic. Hope I can get me some of that before I leave, I doubt it though cause I've had to do some shopping for the last week but anyone who knows me, knows that I loathe shopping so I've been eating Spaghetti alot. Does anyone know any foods that are uniquely Canadian...someone asked me about Canadian food but I couldn't think of any...other than mashed potatoes maybe. That's enough for today....later all...next week Japan...woo ha! |
