To be quite honest, I went into this weekend camp thinking
I may be getting in over my head. I don't think I could have been
any more wrong.
There was a three story log cabin with a state of the art
kitchen and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate all of
us that came, the lodging alone was worth the trip. I wasn't quite
sure how I felt about the location, at least not until I got
there. Mr. Marshall's lodge was set far away from any city
atmosphere and surrounded by acre upon acre of elk-inhabited
forest. Simply beautiful. As for the training, I was very
satisfied with it. People there ranged from completely new to
years of experience and I felt like everyone still picked something
up. Any questions were answered effectively and we were shown the
specifics of why we used a certain approach.
I have been to several martial arts seminars and must say that
I enjoyed this one more than any of the others. Mr. Marshall
displayed more hospitality than anyone could ever expect a host to
do. He opened not only his business to us, but also his entire
facility. I left this camp feeling like I got not only training
experience, but also that I also had made new friends. I
plan on attending any more of these that are offered.

I would like to initially state that my weekend spent at the Elk Ridge Resort was an experience topped only by the occasional vacation getaway. The wealth of knowledge and training that my fellow attendees and I gained was tremendous. Although the drive was rather extensive, the environment we arrived in made the trip worth it. Being able to train out in the middle of nowhere, with all the conveniences of city living at an arms reach, beats dealing with city conditions any day. The resort offered me a feeling of comfort. The people and their hospitality to all of us as strangers felt like friendship only given by those who mean it. Dave Marshal impressed me at every turn. Not a moment would go by without us hearing or doing something new. From first glance I thought he was a stern businessman with a goal of money, soon did I realize that when the man said “help yourself to everything”, he meant it. I left knowing that I will be returning to friends when I go back. I would like to give special thanks to Gary Hoyd, who is not just an excellent teacher of an art but also an excellent friend. He will answer any and all questions at a blink of an eye and will be glad to do it. Gary can teach more in a weekend than I could imagine learning through months of training elsewhere. I will be returning next time around and I hope even more friends will attend to enhance the experience that much more. Hope to see you at the next one, Phil Walsh - [email protected] |
