Part Nine:
(Rei connects sharply with Kananno, and the two of them topple over
onto the ground. Koemi starts screaming as Rei claws blindly, her nails
raking across Kan's chest. Not wanting to really hurt her, Kan slaps Rei
hard across the face, sending her tumbling onto the floor. Koemi quickly
jumps onto Rei and pins her hands up over her head. It's a hard chore to
keep her pinned down, as she's gaining strength. Kananno scoots against
the wall, and looks down at his slashed up chest.)
Kananno: (breathlessly) Christ. Can you hold her till I get this bomb
rigged up?
Koemi: (Straining) Yeah, I think I can manage… just hurry, ok?
(Kananno stumbles over to his watch and HDU chip, bends over it and
connects two small wires, Red and Green, to a battery and then to a small
tube of neon white liquid.)
Kananno: (Hurrying away from the door and leaping onto Rei and Koemi
to cover them) Keep down!
(There is a large blast sends shrapnel, cement pieces and screams filling
the room. When Kananno and Koemi pick their heads up, they see that half
the wall is down, and laying beside the huge pile of rubble are three dead
bodies. One is Oda.)
Kananno: (Jubilantly) WHOO-HOO!
Koemi: Let's get Rei out of here! Before she stays a permanent Vampire.
Kananno: All right!
(They quickly pull Rei up and for an instant look at her. She's snarling,
hissing and her eyes are slowly glazing over.)
Koemi: You can still knock her out. She's not totally invincible yet.
Kananno: (Almost whinning) I really don't want to.
Koemi: (Still straining to hold her wrists) I can't walk out of here
like this. We're going to have to use our grappling. The harness is easier
than holding her.
Kananno: (Sighing heavily) All right. (He punches Rei across the face
and catches her before she hits the ground. Grudgingly) Happy?
Koemi: Not till we get out of here… C'mon!
(Kananno sweeps Rei up into his arms and the two of them walk out of
the broken wall, and are pleased to see their weapons untouched hanging
on a small display rack down the hall. Stealing their weapons back, they
slip out of the building and take the back alleys to the Tunnel.)
Koemi: (Pulling a small string out of her grappling) Here, gimme her.
Kananno: (Laying Rei down on the ground) What are you doing?
Koemi: Getting us out of here. (She quickly unfolds what Kananno had
thought to be the string, but is actually a harness and and straps Rei
in.) There... Now, hold on to me while I save our asses!
Kananno: Who saved whose ass? (Wraps his arms around Koemi's waist.
He doesn't see the large, knowing smile spread across her face before she
fires her grappling and then starts pulling them up, until they can walk
up the wall. Below them, Rei is beginning to stir.)
Kananno: (Looking down) Holy crap! We're high!!!!
Koemi: Wimp. It's only like two hundred feet.
Kananno: Oh no.
Koemi: What?
Kananno: Rei's waking up.
Koemi: Damn. I hope we don't have to battle her all the way to GH.
Kananno: I could bitch-slap her again.
(They reach the top of the tunnel and pull themselves out, then pull
up the rope till Rei is lifted out of the tunnel. She's still unconscious,
but is groaning a little. She won't be out much longer.)
Koemi: Quick. (Motioning with her head to the scooter parked by the
back of a building. The sun is shinning brightly. It's mid-afternoon) Get
some of that antidote in the side bag.
(Kananno rummages through the bag and comes back with a small vile
of neon blue liquid. Koemi quickly sticks it into Rei's arm. She lets out
a small groan, but doesn't wake up.)
Kananno: (A little upset) She might be too far along. I should call
for a Medvan.
Koemi: Yeah, do that.
Kananno: (running over and picking up the scooter's transmitter) Uh,
668 to GH Headquarters. Gonjen, are you in?
(A masculine voice crackles back over the com)
Gonjen: Read you loud and clear, Kananno. What's up? You sound distressed.
Kananno: We need a Medvan on the out skirts by Undercity's tunnel.
NOW!
Koemi: (Grabbing the com from Kananno) Make that two. Thanks. (She
hangs up)
Kananno: (Alarmed) Why? What's wrong? Are you ok?
Koemi: I meant for you. No offense, but you look like hell. Your chest
is bleeding and you're bruised up the wazoo. You might even have a concussion.
(Smiling) But you were very brave.
(Off in the distance, two Medvans are heading towards them, already.
Kananno and Koemi watch them come, till Koemi sees Loki in the passenger's
seat of one of the vans. Kananno turns to Koemi to say something, but she
stops him with a kiss. They're still kissing even as the Medvans pull to
a stop. The only thing that pulls them apart is the sudden cry from Loki)
