Proper Protocol
Having the right attitude and adhering to sometimes strict guidelines and protocol is neccessary. Even though investigations can be enjoyable, I always try to follow strict guidelines to make sure that all findings are of the highest quality. Accuracy and being conscience of your surroundings is a very imporant detail that should never be missed.
At times mistakes will happen in regards to readings and findings. With a set guideline to follow and protocols that govern evidence and behavior you can reduce any mistakes. It will cut down on all errors and make the investigation more enjoyable.

There are many organizations in the United States and World which have their own protocol so I will just list mine. Before starting any investigation I usually do as follows:

1. Interview the witnesses or the people reporting the phenomenon. This would include any history, evidence and "why" they feel they need an investigation.
2. After the interview "and you decide that an investigation is warranted" then there should be a time to do a walkthrough of the property. This could include base findings on electronic equipment, strongest areas of activity, and in the case of cemetaries, etc scoping out the area for danger that you may not be able to see in the dark.
3. A full interview is setup and conducted.
4. All data is collected, analyzed, and discussed with your team.
5. Followup with the witnesses to present your findings and instruct as required.

Now, alot of the following information can be found at my Hints and Tips section but I thought I would post it here as well. Not only hints and tips but these are protocols that are adhered to on any investigation.

1. Never investigate alone. This is not only for a safety issue but also for credible witnesses in case you do see a paranormal event.
2. You represent yourself and your organizations. Remain professional at all times.
3. Alcohol should not be allowed at any time during an investigation and you should never come to an investigation intoxicated. <<This would include drugs as well>>
4. See my article on
Photography. Because our equipment makes all the difference and evidence certain guidelines should govern such including no smoking while taking pictures, removing straps, clean lenses.
5. Always carry identification.
6. Never wonder off alone.
7. ALWAYS check batteries and carry spares. Make sure equipment is operational before starting and if it is not inform the investigation leader.
8. Carry new tapes for recordings, never use old or used tapes.
9. On property or in a house never touch anything that does not belong to you. Respect property and if you need assistance with something ask the home/land owners.
10. No playing around. Making jokes, comments or sly remarks.
11. All investigation evidence (pictures, EVP's, etc) will be documented and scrutinized by all in the team. All avaliable evidence will be discussed, verified, and communicated by the board.
12. Obey and and all instructions given to you by your team lead. Investigations need to be clear and concise without unforseen problems or arguments.
13. Never, ever dowgrade another member of your team or another Paranormal team. If you have issues with someone in specific bring it up in the meetings, not on site!

As far as protocol and guidelines thats about it. Of course Im sure there is alot more that specific paranormal teams come up with to assist them in their investigations. During our investigations we have clear concise guidelines that pertain to equipment and investigations. These are ever changing although it is important to have these guidelines to ensure that everyone knows their specific roles and that all information and data is carefully considered with accuracy.
