The Cumberland Island National Seashore, which is managed by the National Park Service, is located in the southeast corner of Georgia near the town of St. Marys. Since it is an island, and there are no bridges to it, the only access is by water. So if you don't feel like rowing across the Intracoastal Waterway, a ferry is available from St. Marys.
The Island offers many opportunities such as pristine beaches, maritime forests, a bed and breakfast, an abandoned village, a campground, and many trails and backcountry campsites. Wildlife also abounds on the island including wild ponies, armadilos, wild pigs and overly smart racoons.
Reservations for both the ferry and staying in the campground are recommended. A map of the island, which includes the trails, will be mailed after making reservations, or one can be picked up upon arrival. |
