Thomas G(h)inn  (1822-1889)                                                                                                                                   BWE 23 Jan 2009

Thomas Ginn was born in Brighton in 1822, the son of Benjamin and Mary Ginn

Mary died in Nov 1822 (maybe in childbirth), and Thomas was baptised 04 May 1823 at the parish church in

Hamsey, Sussex (some 3 km north of Lewes, and where his mother was living before her marriage)

Thomas was the last of five children, however one of them probably died young

In 1835, when Thomas was only 13 his father Benjamin died, thus leaving five orphans

It is not known who then looked after them, but it could have been their mother's brother Henry Guy

Thomas grew up and was working as a Miller in Hamsey at marriage

Thomas Ginn and Anna Maria Martin of Brighton  were married by licence (issued 02 Dec 1847)

The marriage was held 04 Dec 1847 at the the parish church of  St Nicholas in Brighton,

her father John Martin was a butcher

They had a son Thomas Ginn born 22 Aug 1848, and baptised 26 Nov 1848

at the Tabernacle Congregational  Church , Lewes

Then, over the next five years they had four children, sadly all still born:

             a boy 12 Mar 1850,  a girl 13 Dec 1851, a boy 23 Nov 1852 and finally another girl 15 Feb 1854

On the  30 Mar1851 a census was held and Thomas and family were living at 50 Westmorland Place,

(now called Westland Place) Shoreditch, London. His occupation was given as a 'Merchant's Man'

Thomas, Anna and little Thomas were there, with a female servant, also two visitors, one  was Henry Guy of Hamsey,

presumably Thomas' cousin.

By 1855 they had changed their name to Ghinn, and were living in Commonside, Mitcham, where in 08 Aug 1855

Anna Maria died, Thomas Ghinn was then described as a Chemist

Then only two years later he was married as Thomas Ghinn to Julia Lack at the parish church of St Mary Newington,

her father was a Linen Draper

They were then living in Union Rd , Newington (now called Harper St)

However they soon moved to Bromley-by-Bow, Poplar area where they had eight children all named Ghinn:

             Joseph b. 02 Oct 1858, Alice b. 13 Sep 1859, Lydia b. 04 Jun 1861, Harry b. 28 Aug 1863, Ernest b. 13 Jul 1865,

Ada Mary b. 27 Dec 1867, Elizabeth b. 09 Jan 1873 and George b. 25 Jun 1875

From 1861 to 1884 they lived in Devons Road, Bromley where he worked for the Brittania Rubber Works

Thomas was latterly described as an 'India Rubber manufacturer'

Julia died there  31 Jan 1884 and Thomas died there 30 June 1889, it is not know where they were buried

Thomas, son of Anna Maria, was born in Lewes, Sussex in 1848 and baptised there as Thomas Ginn at the

Tabernacle Congregational Church, there.

In 1851 he was living in Shoreditch as Ginn and in 1861 in Bromley as Ghinn, still with his parents

In 1874 he was married in Fletching, Sussex, living in Leyton Low, then Woodford, Essex. They had children Edith

and then Thomas who died as a baby

In later life Thomas' half brother Ernest gave him financial assistance. Thomas died in 1920

Joseph and Alice both died as babies

Lydia married Heny Hooker in 1891 and emigrated to South Africa

Harry at some stage attended school in France, and was said to have had difficulty speaking English on his return.

He married his first cousin Agnes Lack, he was a master linen draper and had a shop 'H.Ghinn' in Brixton Rd, Brixton

They had four children, one died in his teens, the only other son married but had no children

Harry and Agnes had no grandchildren

Ernest married and had nine children and 27 grandchildren

Ada Mary married Henry Attridge and emigrated to South Africa
