Dear Journal-

Its officially Friday night, which means Im going to see *NSYNC in less than 24 hours. Im so excited I can hardly breathe. Its going to be so much fun. Amanda says were going to make a whole weekend of it and spend the night so we can go shopping on Sunday. Maybe I can play sick so I dont have to go. I hate going shopping with her; she always attracts the attention of every guy that sees her. I feel so out of place.

Much love-
Liz

Elizabeth closed her journal and moved to flip out the light. As she leaned over the table, she caught sight of a picture of Amanda, Kaylen, and herself that had been taken sometime during the fall. Sighing, she pressed her hand to her stomach. She couldnt believe how fat she was, then and now. She looked like a cow. No, not a cow, a buffalo or hippo or elephant. Amanda was so pretty with her chocolate eyes and coffee hair. She had the body of a model. Kaylen was beautiful too; she was a natural blonde with sexy, voluptuous curves, and long slender legs. She had run cross-country throughout high school and had continued to run in college just to keep in shape.

Elizabeth pushed herself to her feet and walked across the room to the full-length mirror mounted on the outside of her closet door.  She turned sideways and stood up straight, pushing in the little pudge of fat that barely stuck out. God, look at yourself. Could you have a worse body? she whispered, lifting her shirt and turning around so she could see her backside. She noticed the little lumps of cellulite forming just under her buttocks and the slight love handles that had plagued her for as long as she could remember.

Theyre not love handles, Mike, her one and only guy friend, had said once. Theyre not anything, its just your imagination.

She knew he had been lying just to make her feel better, and mentally slapped herself for not working out longer that morning. The next day she doubled her exercise time and cut her calorie intake in half.

She turned to the side and focused mainly on her behind. Youre so fat, she spat out to the girl in the mirror. You look like a hippo! Its no wonder youve never had a boyfriend. No one can stand to look at you!
