Session 9: "They've Got Us Surrounded...The Poor Bastards..."
-
After a few moments of sprinting north across the wooded hills, the party slowed down and stopped to question the Halfling about why he shot Maya. He explained that, considering the circumstances, he felt that it was a very reasonable act. The party knew that the McCalisters were looking for Kyte and had sent hunters out after him. They knew that Maya had no scent and that the materials used by her also bore no scent. They also knew that Maya was from Loch Durnan and was trying to take them back to it. He just concluded that she must be one of the hunters and that she had attacked them on that previous evening.
-
The party was torn between punishing the halfling for a seemingly unprovoked attack and agreeing with hsi reasoning. The rapid disappearance of Maya also troubled them. Niclaus settled matters by getting him to surrender his weapons while the group returned to the hill to further investigate the spells that desecrated its holy nature. At the hill, the Halfling also volunteered to try to breach the evil wards that instilled panic in those who tried to get closer to the pool at the center, but was largely unsuccessful. Actually, he was more like a hafling yo-yo as he ran in and out of the warded area; restrained only by a rope tied to his waist.
-
Ivaleus and the Halfling finally got into the warded area and began to search the pool, discovering the grisly remains of a half-eaten humanoid in the western edge of the pool. They were startled by Kyte's desparate yowling and hissing in the branches of a nearby tree. The tree had animated and was crushing the life out of the party's furry companion! As they tried to free him, the tree came alive and fought back: first crushing the Cat to a pulp, then striking down Kaylen, who had been blasting the tree with psionic assaults and shards of crystal. Niclaus executed a number of daring rescues, exposing himself to denger in order to drag the downed party members away for healing while Claz charged in to hack at the foul tree. Severed limbs oozed black sap while Ivaleus's arrows whizzed in and cracked apart the bark. Niclaus moved away from the tree as another began to animate, but the party's assault enraged the leafy giant and it instead uprooted itself and charged, striking Kyte down a second time. Claz then scored a critical hit on the tree with a flask of burning oil, which set its upper branches ablaze. A few more hits and the tree collapsed.
-
The party recovered and decided to move away from the hill untill Niclaus and Ivaleus could determine a way to cleanse the site of the evil taint.
