Excuse me, Commissioner but, isnt that something you do every time you vote on the Court?  You know, affect me, my family, and all the families in Webb County.
Beam me up Scotty......
February 2003
Fuzzy logic:  If the right to speak is based on the Councils ability to do something about the issue, then why isnt the Council Chambers silent?
Laredo Morning Times articleCounty Commissioner David R. Cortez will never vote for something that would affect a family in the county.

ATTENTION: ALL COUNTY EMPLOYEES
REFERENCE: NEW COUNTY PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE - MANDATORY

I pledge allegiance to the click of Bruni, Cortez, and Velasquez

And to the Star Chamber wherein they plan revenge, vendetta and repayment

I swear to keep true faith all allegiance bar truth, fair play, and devotion

And, to their opponents who ever they be, I will not phone, write or seen with be.

I therefore pledge to live as they see fit

Void of right, liberty, or be free
Laredo Morning Times articleMayor Betty Flores denies speech time to city union employees.  The mayor, who has previously allowed citizens to address the council on items that are not listed on the agenda, further said that "the council can't do anything about those issues."
County Judge Louis H. Bruni announces that County employees should pledge allegiance to the Court and particularly this County Judge.  Click here to see related Laredo Morning Times article.

Hmm, what to do, what to do!  Do I break out in song from Annie or quote passages from Gone with the Wind?   Oh, what the heck, Ill just think about it tomorrow.
Laredo Morning Times articleCounty Commissioner David R. Cortez I have a lot of things that I want to do, but that is really not one of my priorities at this time.  Not at this time, no, maybe tomorrow. My priorities change every day."

Welcome to our tongue-in-cheek, Cheers & Jeers page which we affectionately call "Political Relativity".  After all, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction..............

Under the current political climate, it appears that you have a job that few would envy.  However, GGL commends you for your courage to stand up to the political powers that would repress the voices of Webb County.
To the Honorable Representative Richard Raymond and the other state representatives who blocked the first round of redistricting efforts to split Laredo/Webb Co.
September 2003
To the Honorable Homero Ramirez, Webb County Attorney for his intervention into County Judge Louis Bruni's attempt to repress a citizens public comments through the Judges threat to arrest that citizen for contempt of court.
County Judge Louis H. Bruni:

"(Mayor) Betty Flores can go pick up dead bodies on I-35." (Laredo Morning Times September, 2003)

"The Sheriff told me that if anybody is disruptive, I can hold them in contempt of court." (
Laredo Morning Times September, 2003).  Then, later in the same meeting:

"You know, you remind me of my ex-wife."  (
Laredo Morning Times September, 2003)

More often than not, accountability begins with a little planning.  Hopefully, you will become more knowledgeable about the issues before you take actions that affects our community.
Felix Velasquez:
Eliminates the position of Elections Deputy with the approval of the budget for fiscal year 2003-2004.

Within days we find
Webb County Commissioner Felix Velasquez fired the county's chief elections deputy Monday and eliminated the position from the budget.   Now, Velasquez is considering returning the official to the job.   (Laredo Morning Times September, 2003)" and  ..eliminating Villarreal's position could have made the county lose up to $300,000 in federal monies for purchasing voting equipment as mandated by the recently passed Help America Vote Act. (Laredo Morning Times October, 2003)

Velasquez later admitted that his suggestion was a mistake and began efforts to have Villarreal rehired.  (
Laredo Morning Times October, 2003)

GGL salutes you!
October 2003
Bravo!  Spoken like a true representative of the people!
State Representative Richard Raymond ..said he felt so strongly about the negative impact of having Laredo and Webb County split in half, he decided to join the lawsuit to try to stop the map from being enacted.   "I've said all along I would continue to fight this gross injustice, even if it means we have to take it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court" (Laredo Morning Times November, 2003)
Do your words ever leave a bad taste in your mouth or do all your words taste relatively the same?
September 2003
GGL thanks you for your efforts and personal sacrifices.
To the Honorable State Senator Judith Zaffirini and the other nine state senators who made up the "Texas 10".
December 2003
County Judge Louis H. Bruni:        "When I make it rain..."
The Rain Man speakth.  But, the only cloudy part in the county seems to be the spelling:
R-A-I-N  or  R-E-I-G-N?
And just when we thought we had heard it all:  At the Dec. 8, 2003 Commissioners Court meeting, County Judge Louis H. Bruni repeatedly quoted Government is too precious to be left in the hands of the people in defense of his Provaqua Project.  When a public comment speaker challenged this position, he stated that it was part of the Constitution!
So, what's next?
We are still trying to analyze this one particularly, since we didnt notice any resemblance to his ex-wife.
Dj vu at the Dec. 8, 2003 Commissioners Court meeting:  At the prodding of County Commissioner Felix Velasquez, County Judge Louis H. Bruni again threatens contempt of court charges against a speaker during public comments.
Hmm, would that be the Constitution of the Republic of Bruni or in the State of Dementia?

Just for the record: GGL believes that Government is much too valuable
to be left to the whims of Politicians!
