Here is a letter I found in an old book, purchased at a book sale. The title of the book is:

Psychological Survival

THE EXPERIENCE OF LONG TERM IMPRISONMENT

Dear Ms. Gadban,

It seems that I am in need of your help. At the present I am incarcerated for a crime which I did not commit. But because of my name being Pedro M. I got jammed for it. It seems that two spanish speaking men commit a crime and the victims of that crime picked out ten pictures and out of the the ten pictures I was the only one with a spanish surname. Now it seems I need someone to come to court that knows I did not speak spanish and if I remember correctly you was one person that I told I did not speak spanish.

The men that did this spoke broken english with a spanish accent and spanish. I can not go on the stand and let the jury hear me speak because that means the court would reveal my record to them. I am sorry I did not let it tell you I was in here but I did not want anyone to know. But seen (sic) then I have been offered a 10-12 year sentence if I coped out and a 10-20 year sentence if I don't. Seeing that I did not commit this crime I have to go all the way with it so that means I'll face the 10-20 yrs. sentence. I'm hoping that you can come to court and tell the jury and judge that I don't speak spanish or english with a spanish accent. If you can do this for me please let Kit (my cousin) know. If not I can understand.

Thank you,
Pedro M.

P.S. Please don't let anyone know I'm here except maybe the other Pat. Not any of the officials at school as it would really mean my being kicked out.
