American Thunder Night Train Project Bike The American Thunder Night Train Project Bike Santa Monica, CA, July 17 American Thunder's transformation of a 2000 model Harley-Davidson Night Train loaded not only with high-performance parts and accessories.

The motorcycle began life as a completely stock 2000 machine. The AT staff chronicles a list of modifications designed to make it a very special ride indeed. The mission is to use the wide array of after-market components available to upgrade the machine in three distinct areas: aesthetics, braking and handling. Over the course of the next parts, we add several go-fast goodies from the Harley-Davidsons Screamin Eagle catalog, a set of new Storz Ceriani forks and a boatload of beautiful billet parts from Performance Machine. So join us as we transform our stock machine into a rolling catalog of aftermarket finery.

Tonight we roll our project bike over to Performance Machine in La Palma, California where we picked out a set of very sano satin black inverted forks from Storz Performance to help smooth out the bumps along the road in style.

For our Night Train Project Bike we chose the Storz Ceriani fork in a custom black anodized finish.

- Storz Ceriani Fork / Part #: HD55WG-DSB

While we were there we couldnt resist raiding the Performance Machine warehouse to add an impressive list of custom black anodized PM billet components to the bike including:

Performance Machines Parts List

- PM Wire spoke wheels - PM billet hubs - PM billet pulley - PM 4 piston rear brake system - PM 13" full floating discs - PM 6 piston differential bore calipers - PM hand controls - PM billet switch housings - PM Billet mirrors

Next we wanted to increase the performance of our Night Train with the help of Harley-Davidsons Screamin Eagle performance parts catalog so we took the bike over to Bartels Harley-Davidson. There the Bartels team of top-flight mechanics helped us install several Screamin Eagle performance parts resulting in a substantial increase in both horsepower and torque. First we ran the stock twin-cam 88 bike on the shops Dyno-Jet 150 dynamometer and recorded 58.1 horsepower and 72 ft. lbs. of torque. After adding just three items, a Screamin Eagle .045 pilot fuel jet, a High Flow Air Filter and a two into one exhaust pipe we ran this new combination on the dyno and our peak horsepower had increased by five ponies while our torque went up by five pounds.

Screamin Eagle Parts list:

- Breather Kit (part # 29440-99) - 2 in 1 pipes (part # 64796-00) - .045 pilot jet

Also, keep in mind that Harley-Davidson offers a full, one-year warranty on all street legal Genuine Motor Accessories that are installed by the dealer prior to new vehicle delivery. The warranty even applies to street legal Screamin Eagle Performance Parts and Accessories. Otherwise, all Harley-Davidson Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories carry a 90 day warranty. So it seems like a no brainer to us, if you are planning on adding some performance parts to your new Harley-Davidson have them done at the dealer on the front end and you will gain an extra 9 months of warranty coverage.

Were not done with this project yet, were having way too much fun. So keep watching in upcoming weeks as we continue the transformation of our Night Train Project Bike and if you have any questions or comments about the project along the way feel free to drop us an e-mail at [email protected] sv (Photo: American Thunder)

Part 2

American Thunder - Night Train Part II The American Thunder Night Train project bike Santa Monica, CA, August 21 this time a quest for more horsepower for our Night Train project bike. We go in search of serious horsepower with more parts from the Harley-Davidson Screamin Eagle performance catalog.

Once again we rolled the bike over to Bartels Harley-Davidson and began our wrenching. We tried various combinations using Screamin Eagle ignition, coil, spark plugs, 203 cams, 204 cams, 42mm flat slide carb, 44mm CV carb, two into one exhausts and finally a pair of Screamin Eagle II slip ons. Adjustable pushrods were also used.

Our best and final results were horsepower of 72.2 with 84.2 ft lbs of torque (stock was 58.1 hp and 72ft lbs of torque on the same dyno).

These results were achieved with the combination of a Screamin Eagle ignition module and coil kit, a 44mm CV big bore carb kit, a new intake manifold, a 204 Cam kit, a set of new plug wires and plugs and finally a set of Screamin Eagle II slip fit shorty dual mufflers.

American Thunder Night Train - Part III Santa Monica, CA, September 18 Tonight we continue to work on our Harley-Davidson Night Train project bike. If you remember back in July Part I of our project focused on dressing up the look of the bike, then in Part II in August we began to upgrade the powerplant in search of more power and performance. Part III continues this quest with a bevy of new parts all focused on adding even more horsepower and torque.

Our stated mission on this project was to use only Harley's Screamin' Eagle parts and this is important because even though there are a large number of companies that make great parts and perhaps can claim big horsepower gains our project was designed to show what you can do at your local Harley dealer while still maintaining a high degree of reliability and serviceability.

On this show we complete the transformation of our 88 cubic inch engine to the Harley 95 cubic inch kit with forged pistons, roller rockers, adjustable push-rods, Screamin' Eagle performance Heads, Big Bore Cylinders, SE 258 cam kit, Screamin" Eagle II slip on mufflers, CV 44mm Carb and finally a 42 mm flat slide carb.

The part numbers for the parts added on tonights show include:

Dyno results with the parts above yielded 83.9 horsepower and 90 ft lbs of torque.

We couldn't resist playing around with various combinations and in doing so found a real winner with the 42mm flat slide carb yielding top horsepower and torque numbers with an impressive 87.4 hp and 93.2 ft lbs of torque!

American Thunder: Night Train Part IV Santa Monica, CA, October 16

Tonight we continue to work on our Harley-Davidson Night Train project bike. If you remember back in July Part I of our project focused on dressing up the look of the bike, then in Part II in August we began to upgrade the powerplant in search of more power and performance. Last month in Part III we continued this quest with a bevy of new parts all focused on adding even more horsepower and torque. This week we look at aftermarket exhaust systems. We installed each one and tested them all on the dyno so we have not only hp figures but we also give our first hand impressions of fit, finish and ease of installation. Below is the list of pipes we put through the mill.

American Thunder: Night Train Part V Santa Monica, CA, November 20

Last month, in Part IV of our Harley-Davidson Night Train project, we mounted up every set of exhaust pipes we could lay our hands on in a frantic search for more power. The winner was the beautifully finished Bassani Pro Street pipe which put out 101hp, was easy to install and was an excellent fit on our modified Night Train. This time we look at eight sets of two into one exhaust sets for our Night Train project bike. Once again we installed each set and tested them on the dyno to get the hp figures. Then we made notes on our first hand impression of each set with respect to fit, finish and ease of installation. Below is the list of two into one pipes we checked out
