Jan Schaap

Jan Schaap, my gggrandfather, arrived at New Orleans, La 19 NOV 1846 aboard the "Wakema." He was married at St. Louis to Hermina Bloemers on 14 FEB 1847 by William S. Potts, Pastor of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of St. Louis.

They traveled up river to Ottawa County, Michigan where Jan and Teunes Keppel, a fellow passenger on the "Wakema", bought land together as tenants-in common. On 01 MAR 1850 Patent issued on the northeast Quarter of the southwest Quarter of Section twenty-seven (27) in Township five (5) north of Range fifteen (15) west in the District of Lands subject to sale at Ionia, Michigan, containing 40 acres. The purchase price was $1.25 per acre.

Jan and Hermina appeared in the 1850 Census of Holland Township, Ottawa, Michigan. It was the practice of the Hollanders to take orphans into their homes as there were many deaths in the early years. There is a story of an orphanage being built but by the time it was completed all the orphans had been taken in and it was never used as an orphanage. J. K. Ver Beek in Jan Schaap's home is very likely such an orphan.

Both Johanna Schaap and her sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) Schaap married in Grant County, WI to Bushnell brothers. Johanna to my ggrandfather, Levi Newton Bushnell and Lizzie to Levi's brother, Daniel Willis Bushnell. Both families homesteaded in Sully County, Dakota Terrirtory. Jan Schaap and Hemina, who gave testimony on behalf of her daughter's Civil War pension application, came to Blunt, South Dakota in 1892 and both are buried at the Blunt Cemetery on Highway 14 near the top of the hill about 2 miles west of Blunt, Hughes, SD.

From the Blunt Advocate, Blunt, SD, Thursday, May 3, 1894:

DIED

Mr. John Schaap of this place died at his home Saturday morning at the ripe old age of 75 years. Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. Shelland of Huron. Mr. Schaap was born in Holland. In the fall of 1892 he came here from Platteville, Wis., where he had resided with his family a number of years and previous to that in Michigan and Illinois. The past winter he was taken with the grip, since which time he had experienced more or less trouble from heart disease, which was the immediate cause of his death. Mr. Schaap was a member of the M.E. church. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their loss of a good husband and father.

From the Blunt Advocate, Blunt, SD, Friday, April 17, 1896:

HARROLD

A number of old residents here attended the funeral of Mrs. Schaap, in Blunt today. Death had been long desired and came as a welcome relief while her steadfast trust and christian character robbed it of all it's terrors.

Difficult to read, the stone is inscribed as follows:"
