| GATLIN EDUCATION SERVICES Medical Transcription Certificate Program Facilitator: Carrie Stein, CMT GES GRADING POLICIES ____________________________________________________________________________________________ MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY GRADING The GES medical terminology portion of this course is graded via computer on the Evolve medical terminology web site. These grades will not count toward your final grade average or toward the medical transcription certificate of completion; however, your instructor is always available to answer questions. SENDING WORK TO FACILITATOR TO BE GRADED Send each report as an attachment to an email. Send only one attachment per e-mail. Your instructor will grade the report and email the graded report back to you. Please send each report that is on the list below in this same manner. Send only the Case 1 Emergency Services Admission Report first. If a redo and resubmission of the report is required, your instructor will let you know. You should wait until you receive a grade on your resubmitted report before submitting further Case 1 reports. After your instructor has graded all Case 1 reports, your instructor will send further instructions on how to submit reports for the rest of the course. MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION GRADING Each report is graded separately. 1. If a medical or English term is spelled wrong, one point is taken off. If a wrong word has been used, one point is taken off. This is done for each instance in which the word is misspelled or misusedeven if the patient name is misspelled on every page. These errors will be highlighted in yellow. 2. For errors in grammar, punctuation, style, and formatting, point is taken off each time the error occurs. These errors will be highlighted in blue. 3. Words which require informative remarks will be highlighted in green. These remarks are for your information only and no points are counted off. 4. Sometimes your instructor makes comments about your errors. These comments are listed at the end of the report as endnotes. 5. The Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review is to be turned in to your instructor to be graded. A link to the Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review is on the main page of this web site. It counts 22% of your course grade. Copy and paste it into a document, answer the questions using a bright blue font, and email it to your instructor. See the main page of this web site for more information about the pages to study for the grammar review. In summary: Misspelling, wrong word used (English word or medical term) = minus 1 point. Words or phrases omitted = minus 1 point per word Errors in grammar, punctuation, style, format = minus 1/2 point each occurrence There are 100 reports in the Hillcrest dictated material, of which the instructor will grade 30 (see below). The student grades the balance of his/her transcribed work via the solutions on the web site. The material to be graded by the instructor is listed below. The 13 computer quizzes at the end of the first 13 Units on the GES student web site will equal 13% of the final grade average. The Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review will equal 22% of the final grade average. This is found in the student information documents on this web site. The Final Exam taken at the end of Unit 20 on the GES student web site will equal 27% of the final grade average. It includes material from the Hillcrest text-workbook, the Units on the GES student web site, the Student Information Documents on this web site, the Grammar/Punctuation/Style Rules Review, and the transcribed reports. Grading Scale for Transcribed Reports is based on 85 to 100. Earning a grade below 85 = redo. The certificate of completion policy for all GES students requires a final grade average of 70 or higher. On the job, however, an MT is required to have 98% to 100% accuracy. It is therefore strongly recommended that reports with a grade below 85 be redone. Your instructor will allow you to redo reports with a grade below 85 in order to help improve your accuracy and proofreading skills as a transcriptionist. Medical transcription is a highly competitive field, and accuracy and proofreading skills are the two most important skills to have.. |
