| Why we love Hubbas | ||||||
| There is something magical about the restaurant which was at different times known as Texas chili, Pats, and today Hubbas. What is it that makes this place packed at two in the morning? What is it that a fatass such as myself can eat there twice a week over the summer and not feel that guilty about it? And most importantly, why is the Port Chester Hubba's so much better than the Stamford one? First, let's consider the price. Hubba's doesn't exactly break the bank, but at the same time is as, if not more, expensive than other restaurants that serve similar dishes. A burger with fries and a drink at a place such as Applebees will cost in the $8-9 price range. A chillicheeseburger wedge with plain fries and a soda at Hubbas costs about $8.50. So, the price isn't the reason. The portions are not anything spectacular either, with burgers whose smallness leaves even the least "gifted" feeling unintimidated. The amount of food for the money does not quite add up, so why the hell is everyone going there, goddamnit?! The food is damn good, though. No one can deny this. Whether you like their meatball-chili-cheese-pepper wedge, or their chilicheesburge wedge, or their chllicheese dogs, one thing is clear: when you have Hubbas, you have lots of chilli and cheese. There's something about freshly cooked Hubbas that McDonalds, Burger King, or Wendy's just can't compare to. It's made with care too. You can taste the love put into the food in each bite (and the inner turmoil put in when you hit the toliet later in the evening). But still, with prices unproportional with the portions, the food quality does not quite justify Hubba's great popularity. The real reason we love Hubba's is the same reason the Port Chester Hubba's kicks the shit out of the Stamford Hubba's, it's got character. The Stamford Hubba's is sterile and boring. The Port Chester Hubba's is dirty, small, but friendly and homely. It's got those dollars that let everyone get their message or name out there to be a part of a major gastronomical institution in Port Chester. Hell, the Stamford Hubba's doesn't even have hubba water (gasp!). Hubba water may epitomize the Hubba experience. It's plain water in an unextravegant styrofoam cup, but it's got a little bit of fruit punch in it to both add some flavor and to help cool your mouth (the little bit of sugar does help, where plain water would only make the chili worse)., a kind of consiontiousness on the part of the restaurant that is an integral part of the atmosphere. It's laid back, simple, and good. That's it. Plus they have RC Cola, the underdog cola company. And everyone loves the underdogs. Hubba's is a special kind of place that the fast food places will never come close to. It's food quality, character, and overall charm are unbeatable, ask any fat mess in PC and they'll tell you: Hubbas fucking rocks. |
