The story behind the origins of the Porsche 924 is as varied as any associated with a car. Development order EA 425, which the Volkswagen company had commissioned Porsche with in 1970, was originally intended to be a successor model to the VW-Porsche 914. Then it was to be a thoroughbred Volkswagen, until VW boss Schmücker decided to abolish the sports car from the range completely. With this turn of events, Porsche took over the finished car to build it at its Audi-NSU site in Neckarsulm.
